About the Author

Dr. Levi received his MD degree in 1986 from the University of Ottawa and completed his residency in 1995 at the University of Toronto. This was followed by spine fellowships at the University of Toronto and the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix. Dr. Levi joined the faculty at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in 1997, and is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery. He specializes in the surgical treatment of spine and peripheral nerve disorders.

Harry J. Gensler, S.J., is Professor of Philosophy at John Carroll University in Cleveland. Great college logic text

Father Harry J. Gensler, a Jesuit priest and philosopher, packs a lot of material into this large glossy paperback logic textbook. Covering both traditional and contemporary logic, he also provides a history of logic in addition to logic exercises for each section that correspond to an online logic program at his website. If you want a comprehensive overview of logic, this is the book for you. Since I don't know a lot of math and am generally intimidated by logic, I thought this book would lose me pretty quickly, but I was pleased to discover that I could follow it (even when I didn't take time to do all the exercises) very easily. You'll learn a lot and become more logical as you read it, but it takes a lot of time to go through the text fully, if you really want to immerse yourself. It's a rich text. Gensler's online logic quiz, meant to be taken as a logic gut check at you start the book, is a particular highlight.

I am teaching introduction to mathematical reasoning out of this book

and I love it. The students enjoy it also. Given the extremely low level of mathematical technique taught in US high schools these days, trying to teach them calculus is (in my opinion) a waste of time. After a course based on Gensler's book, the students will have some idea of what thinking is and how to use logical reasoning in everyday life. I have taught both "math for poets" and "math for CS majors" out of this. Interestingly, poets are not worse at grasping the material.

A Love for Logic

Before purchasing this book I did not care for logic as a branch of philosophical questioning. Working with the text, however, has led me to love logic, even to the point of obsession. Friends were sure to find me pouring over the sample arguments in the university library or a study room in an academic building. I enjoyed the chapters on Propositional and Modal Logic in particular. It is with these forms of logical argumentation that I have made consistent headway concerning my senior research paper.

As a student aspiring to recieve a Ph.D. in philosophy, I would highly recommend this text to any person interested in learning logic. Dr. Gensler is a premier logician, and his skill is evident when you read this text. A bonus, an advantage held by this book over similar titles is the companion software that was developed by Dr. Gensler himself. Instructions can be found within the appendixes to download it straight from the web.

Whether you are a student of philosophy; an aspiring scientist, lawer, or otherwise; or just someone who wishes to broaden their horizons, "Introduction to Logic" by Dr. Harry Gensler is an excellent choice. I have no qualms about saying that it was mine.

In 2000, the World Health Organization predicted that 85 percent of 15-year-olds in Botswana would eventually die of AIDS. Life expectancies were projected to be shortened by 44 years. But in 2006, Botswana began receiving antiretroviral drugs, and its health prospects turned around dramatically. Dow brings a legal and human-rights perspective and Essex brings a medical-research perspective to chronicling the extent of the devastation of HIV/AIDS and the lessons learned from treating the disease and beating back the dire predictions. At one point, deaths were so prevalent that every Saturday was set aside for funerals. The traditional yearlong mourning was cut short, and family members had to help overwhelmed hospital staff. Dow recalls his mother’s recitation of the long list of friends, relatives, and neighbors who died, the stigma and shame that has led to divorce in a nation that takes marriage very seriously. Essex details the course of the disease, the public health issues, and the private suffering of AIDS patients. Unity Dow and Max Essex illuminate the AIDS epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa by reporting on its consequences for the lives of those living in a single country, Botswana. Dow is a human rights lawyer and judge. Essex is an AIDS scientist at Harvard University. They have deployed their complementary experiences to examine multiple aspects of AIDS, dividing each chapter in half. Dow describes the personal stories of those affected by AIDS. She creates play scripts of conversation to situate the issue at hand--AIDS among children, access to medicines, fear and stigma, diagnosis--in a context that illustrates the intimacy and tragedy of the epidemic. Essex follows up with a scientific explanation of the preceding drama, together with his own reflections abpout what is being done to prevent such an episode from happening again. It is an effective strategy, drawing the reader into the particular culture of AIDS in Botswana, while showing what the global medical research enterprise into HIV can deliver for people who live in often excruciating poverty. An interesting glimpse of the AIDS epidemic in Southern Africa

I read this book soon after it was released, and I appreciated learning about the AIDS epidemic from both a medical and a sociological point-of-view. The impact of HIV/AIDS, particularly in countries like Botswana, is all-encompassing. Max Essex is a forerunner in AIDS research, particularly in Botswana where the infection rates are somewhere close to 30%. The style of this book is written in two voices - Max Essex's and Unity Dow's. Max provides the scientific understanding of the disease, while Unity illustrates the consequences of the HIV/AIDS infection with faces and names. My favorite genre of books to read that of biographies/autobiographies. I like the way that Unity's human-interest stories alternate with Max's explanation of the research that has been done. At first I had some difficulty identifying who was 'speaking' and when - but the book becomes more fluid with each chapter. It is interesting how culture comes up against research and how, given the incessant deaths from the disease, Botswana culture has had to accommodate these new challenges and adapt accordingly. I work as an administrator in this field, and I found that this book greatly helped my understanding of my work. I was interested enough to read this book in a day or two, and the images still remain in my mind. It is not often that you encounter a book that appeals on so many levels - and imparts complex information without being condescending or pedantic. I have read some of Unity Dow's other work as well, and she has a fine, narrative voice. She captures the spirit of her culture so well that it is difficult not to pay attention. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

Beautiful portray of the burden of HIV/AIDS both in a narrative and factual manner

The pairing of the experiences of both Dow and Essex concerning HIV/AIDS makes for a powerful illustration of the burden and suffering created by the disease. Not only informative, but heart-wrenching. Beautifully done. Not just a great read for those interested in Africa and global/public health, but can be easily read by the average audience as well.

These authors have so much knowledge about this. The style of the book is perfect in helping the reader not only learn about the illness but also helping to relate to those with the disease and understand how HIV/AIDS affects more than just the body and those infected with it. A great read where you will learn much.

equally amazing, the author attributes to Rockefeller the memory of ...

I definitely should have downloaded a sample before buying this book. It opens with a lyrical recital of Michael Rockefeller's thoughts and feelings as he swam toward New Guinea from his capsized catamarin. The author must truly have done extensive research in order to learn what went through Rockefeller's mind in those final hours since the next thing he tells us is that Rockefeller was killed without communicating more than a "shout" to his "rescuers". And, equally amazing, the author attributes to Rockefeller the memory of his "Widener swim" at Harvard; the only problem is that the entire history of the Widener swim is as fabricated as the author's imagined recollection of Rockefeller's final thoughts. It is possible to claim that Hoffman should be granted "poetic license" in order to be more engaging, but both his publisher and Amazon categorize this book as history not as historical fiction. I am amazed that Hoffman got away with this deception and deeply disappointed that Simon Winchester recommended the book without calling the author on his fictionalized speculation masquerading as history.

Not a compelling enough story for an entire book.

I was intrigued by the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller, but this well researched narrative account could have been condensed into a much shorter book. The book contained insight into the family dynamics of the Rockefellers, and insights into Michael's character. Acting without any sensitivity to the cultural importance of the artifacts he was collecting as "art", nor attempting to understand the Asmat people, while living among them, led inevitably to his destruction.. The tragedy of Michael Rockefeller"s death is that he was doomed by his arrogance and lack of regard for the indigenous people and the complex structure of their culture. Students of cultural anthropology may find this book interesting, because of the content relating to the Asmat people.

A fascinating documentary of indigenous life

Having travelled in and out of Papua New Guinea as a consultant for two years, I was deeply interested in the cultural aspects of the other half of New Guinea. One of the things we learned was that a lack of understanding of the culture and social mores is a critical mistake. Hoffman does a great job of getting to know the people and not imposing his values on them as so many missionaries do. Additionally, his writing style is exceptional. He takes an event that happened over fifty years ago and brings it to life on many levels. My only criticism lies in the statements that cannibalism and head hunting are no longer practiced. They as well as shape shifting, witchcraft, and the spirit world are alive and well today
