The collector's item of the 20th Century!

This book is renowned as THE collector's item of the 20th Century. It's reputation precedes it due to the fact that when the authors' decided to publish an updated second edition, they felt it extremely necessary to include the now infamous Chapter 13, titled as "Enemy Attack And The UFO Potential."

This was confirmed in a highly revealing interview with one of the authors on "Sightings," a popular weekly television show hosted by Tim Rice and produced by Henry Winkler during the 1990s.

Inheriting Leonard Nimoy's "In Search Of" legacy, which aired during the 1970s, "Sightings" drew a tremendous audience during the 1990s as it explored and analyzed many different aspects of the paranormal and metaphysical genres.

When the "Sightings" crew focused their interest on the "Fire Officer's Guide to Disaster Control, Second Edition," it gave the book, its authors and its controversial Chapter 13 a level of public exposure that basically ripped the rug out from under any false notions that UFOs or alien craft were not real local, state or national issues.

I got my hands on a copy by calling Fire Engineering Books and Videos and pretending to be a firefighter. This was just before they caught on as to what was happening due to public interest generated by the "Sightings" episode.

Anecdote 1:

An atheist/agnostic friend of mine had read Chapter 13 and her comments were as such: "I can't believe this! This is absolutely shocking to me! Anyone who is the least bit mentally imbalanced would surely commit suicide after reading this!"

What amazed her the most was its casual, professional, matter-of-fact approach - as if to say this happens everyday for firefighters.

Anecdote 2:

My brother, who had just started his own trucking delivery service at the time, had actually crossed paths with the warehouse that stored and shipped copies of "Fire Officer's Guide to Disaster Control" for the publishing house. While making a delivery, he spotted the books stacked on pallets in the warehouse and, knowing a good opportunity when he sees one, decided to ask about the Second Edition.

The guys in the warehouse looked at each other and then back at my brother. They began to smile, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. "You're talking about that Chapter 13, right?" they asked. They already knew why he was inquiring. They told him that everyone always asks about that edition and that chapter.

Are You Sure You Want THIS Job?

This book is a broad study of about all the large disasters a Fire Officer might need to understand something about. There are statistics, and some very good facts about the many subjects including myths and misconceptions. And UFOs. The chapters are well organized and the print is large enough for relaxed reading. The book is written in a casual, but professional style that keeps your interest.

I recommend it for any EMS, Fire, or civil defense/preparedness students or professionals. The only reason for a 4/5 rating is the broadness of each subject. Anyone in the business knows each chapter is worth a book all by itself. This work is a great accomplishment and my copy cost $55 in 1995. Its only slightly dated, HazMat is still chemicals, riots are bad, Terrorism is still violent. These authors did a great job!

Defintely the MOST comprehensive disaster control book...

How many other books of this type have a chapter concerning how to deal with a UFO crash? Seriously, Chapter 13 is entitled "Enemy Attack and UFO Potential." I've always been a skeptic concerning these types of things, but when a completely serious book like this has a chapter about dealing with UFOs (and one of the authors claims to have seen one), you just have to wonder...

Immortal

Plato's Phaedo is perhaps the most famous meditation on death and immortality in all of Western philosophy. It laid the basis for much of Christian theology and is perhaps the definitive text on the problem of body and soul. Socrates, while confronted with immanent death by poisoning, seeks to appease his interlocutors by demonstrating the immortality of the soul. This is a dialectical presentation of Plato's doctrine of the 'forms' in perhaps its clearest formulation. According to the Platonic doctrine of soul and body: "when the soul and body are together, nature orders the one to be subject and to be ruled, and the other to rule and be master." This is a timeless and crucially important dialogue in the Platonic corpus. It is also among the most cogent and readable.

Great, but why not buy a collection?

"Phaedo" is one of Plato's best and most important works. Though well worth reading by itself, the fact that it is widely anthologized - e.g., in The Trial and Death of Socrates - makes it very hard to justify a standalone.

Though apparently early and not as complex or philosophically influential as later ones, "Phaedo" is immensely important in portraying Socrates' death. Along with the aforementioned dialogues, it is our clearest picture of the historical Socrates and would be invaluable for this alone. Indeed, I have read hundreds - perhaps thousands - of books, and this is one of my ten or so favorites, mostly because of how moving the depiction of the great man's last days is. The story of Socrates' last moments is part of world literature's very fabric, an immortal part of Western cultural heritage. However, the works have great value even aside from this; a few have indeed questioned their historical veracity. This does not affect their philosophical, literary, and political worth, which is of the highest, making the book doubly essential.

"Phaedo" ostensibly details Socrates' last moments, including his last look at his wife and child, his last dialogue, his last words to friends, and his actual death. A large part of Socrates' image comes from this, and its potential historical value is inconceivable, though its historicity can easily be doubted since the work itself strongly suggests that Plato was not there. Even so, it is likely accurate in regard to the things that really matter and certainly a fine account of how it very well could have been. It is extremely moving; shot through with pathos, it is one of the most affecting things I have ever read. One can surely not read it without being overcome by emotion; I can hardly even think of it without misty eyes. Anyone who respects and admires this central Western civilization figure will be profoundly touched; his famous last words seem comic out of context but are very much otherwise here, telling us much about Socrates and moving us yet further. This would be one of the greatest works of all-time if it had no other aspect, but it is also a fine dialogue appropriately dealing mostly with death. Plato examines perennial questions like the soul's immortality and metempsychosis very thoroughly and thought-provokingly, and the conclusion - unsurprisingly, given the circumstances - has uncharacteristic certainty. It may not convince our cynical, empiricist, science-loving, twentieth century-surviving age, but the argument is certainly well-made and in many ways admirable. The dialogue touches on other important subjects also and is generally seen as the culmination of Plato's early, Socrates-centered thought.

The ever-important translation issue must also be kept in mind. It goes without saying that anyone who cares about intellectual issues, especially applied ones, must know Plato, as should anyone who wants to be even basically well-read. However, this is far easier said than done for most; he is so different from what now passes for literature, to say nothing of pop culture, that he is virtually inaccessible to general readers. Yet the importance of persevering cannot be overemphasized; the payoff is well worth the effort. As nearly always in such cases, reading him becomes far easier after the initial difficulty; no attentive reader will ever think Plato easy reading, but he is utterly absorbing once we get used to his style. He has a near-poetic beauty that all agree has never even been remotely approached in philosophy, and such mesmerizing prose is rare in any genre. His dialogues are an incredible form at once intellectually and aesthetically pleasing - an inspired combination that has perhaps never been bettered; many have appropriated it, but none have matched it. All this means that picking the right translation is probably more important with Plato than any other writer. For the average reader, the more recent, the better is generally true, though older translations like W. H. D. Rouse's and Benjamin Jowett's are still very accessible. The important thing is to read Plato in some form, and those who happen on a translation that does not work for them should keep trying until their mind opens in a truly new way - and once done, it will never close again.

Plato's Phaedo is a classic. This review is focused more on what makes this book different from others, which is it's commentary. It contains comments on plot meanings, word meanings, literature references, and more. Only thing I did not like about the book was that the commentary is in the back, so if want to read the commentary right after reading the line or paragraph it is about you need to keep flipping back and forth in the book. I would have rather had the comments at the bottom of the page.

Great job by Dover to bring this back in print as usual. I'm a big W. Heath Robinson fan and anyone else who is should pick this up. While the story itself is rather bizarre for today's world, Robinson's whimsically detailed line work carries it through.

From the Buddhist point of view, wealth is always and everywhere a matter of perception. This book is about discovering the essence of prosperity, in which material wealth has a role to play but not the central one. Getting to know one's mind through the practice of sitting meditation is the foundation of a wealthy outlook, which is the key to abundance of many kinds.

With a little transcendent accounting we can restate this from the Buddhist perspective to say, "if you know how to appreciate a moment, you will know how to appreciate a lifetime".
 
The Buddhist advice for economic life is the same as for every other aspect of life: start with the view.  The idea is that understanding the foundations of a situation, in this case the human condition, helps us to make better choices going forward.
 
All human beings wish to be happy and free from suffering.  The Buddhist approach is to contemplate the nature of happiness and suffering themselves as the means to navigate toward a more joyful existence and the elimination of suffering.  Here suffering is distinguished from pain as the misery that comes from being habitually unable to appreciate things as they are.
 
Economic life is often regarded as a necessary evil to support true spirituality or material comfort, but that is a shame because seeing the economic aspect of life as a spiritual path has great potential to help us cheer up.
 
Economic setbacks can even be opportune for contemplating the nature of economic life and wealth itself.  It's much easier to overlook the subtleties of our experience when times are good, and taming the mind in the face of uncertainty has profound benefits for oneself and others.
 
This book is based on a series of five public talks given at the Hope Lutheran Church in Nanaimo, B.C. beginning in the autumn of 2008; and one open house talk at the Victoria Shambhala Centre in July 2012.  The introductory talk in the Nanaimo series went unrecorded, so the Victoria talk is included to take its place.
 
All of these were offered as public talks without prerequisites; as such, each one starts with an introduction or review.  I hope that you will find this iterative approach clarifying and reinforcing as we comb through the key ideas with different examples again and again.
 
Buddhist teachings are sometimes divided into the stages of view, practice, and action.  View is the most fundamental of these because the other stages depend on it.  This book provides an introduction to meditation as the highest best vehicle to establish a wealthy outlook, which is the first step and the fruition of genuine prosperity.

The perfect guide to joining the view of meditation with the meaning of wealth

Mr. Matthews has written an extremely valuable book bringing together two subjects rarely connected: money and Buddhism. His background both as an economist / business owner combined with many years as a student and teacher of meditation creates the perfect seat from which to present this material.

Bringing together the view of both inherent wealth and material wealth as it relates to the traditional teaching of the Four Noble Truths first presented by the Buddha creates the perfect framework for looking closely at the meaning of human worthiness, what we value, where richness comes from, and ultimately how this relates to our money and livelihood.

Based on teachings he presented to audiences over the course of his teachings series, Mr. Matthews' book provides a helpful and insightful treatment of these topics that will benefit both new students and long time practitioners of meditation and Buddhism. I'm so pleased to see this book now available to a wide audience so that the teachings of inherent human goodness can be brought to the world of wealth and money.

As practicing Buddhist and a financial professional this book is invaluable for me personally and for my clients, many of who are also Buddhists.
