About the Author

Laura E. Berk is a distinguished professor of psychology at Illinois State University, where she has taught child and human development to both undergraduate and graduate students for more than three decades. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in child development and educational psychology from the University of Chicago. She has been a visiting scholar at Cornell University, UCLA, Stanford University, and the University of South Australia.

Berk has published widely on the effects of school environments on children’s development, the development of private speech, and most recently, the role of makebelieve play in development. Her research has been funded by the U.S. Office of Education and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. It has appeared in many prominent journals, including Child Development, Developmental Psychology,Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Development and Psychopathology, and Early Childhood Research Quarterly. Her empirical studies have attracted the attention of the general public, leading to contributions to Psychology Today and Scientific American.

Berk has served as research editor for Young Children and consulting editor for Early Childhood Research Quarterly and the Journal of Cognitive Education and Psychology. She is a frequent contributor to edited volumes on early childhood development, having recently authored chapters on the importance of parenting, on make-believe play and self-regulation, and on the kindergarten child. She has also written the chapter on development for The Many Faces of Psychological Research in the Twenty-First Century (Society for the Teaching of Psychology), the chapter on social development for The Chicago Companion to the Child, the article on Vygotsky for the Encyclopedia of Cognitive Science, and the chapter on storytelling as a teaching strategy for Voices of Experience: Memorable Talks from the National Institute on the Teaching of Psychology (Association for Psychological Science). Berk’s books include Private Speech: From Social Interaction to Self-Regulation, Scaffolding Children’s Learning: Vygotsky and Early Childhood Education, and Landscapes of Development: An Anthology of Readings. In addition to Infants, Children, and Adolescents, she is author of the best-selling texts Child Development and Development Through the Lifespan, published by Allyn and Bacon. Her book for parents and teachers is Awakening Children’s Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference.

Berk is active in work for children’s causes. In addition to service in her home community, she is a member of the national board of directors of Jumpstart, a nonprofit organization�that provides early literacy intervention to thousands of low-income preschoolers across the United States, using college and university students as interveners. Intro to Real Bible Study

I have most of Dr. Jensen's study materials. I would classify this NT Notebook as a guide to begin how to do an inductive study. Questions are all essay type with ample room to write out your response, 2 bible translation versions of the text to compare similar text. This notebook would give the user a 10,000 ft. view of the text, (his Survey of the NT/OT would be 25,000 ft. view, self-study guide, 1,000 overview and the Do-It-Yourself, at tree-top level). This notebook would be easy to use. I plan on incorporating the questions into the bible studies I lead as they are good 'thought provoking' question on the text reviewed. - only my $.02 opinion.

Great for Students & Teachers

Although this book is intended primarily for self-study, it is a wonderful tool for anyone leading a group Bible study. The book has a very unique structure where each page is broken into 2 columns. The left page has a column with the passage in the Living Bible translation and a column with questions focusing on doctrine and application (ex. Why is obedience to Christ so important for a Christian?). The right page has a column with the same passage in the King James and a column with questions focused on important facts in each paragraph (ex. What did Jesus foretell would happen soon?). There is ample room on each page to record answers and insights. This book helps the reader to examine each passage carefully, and the questions are appropriate to use when leading a group Bible study.

A Warning and a Review

First, a warning: This book comes in two editions. The first is the KJV in one column and the Living Bible in the other. The second edition has the KJV in one column and the New International Version in the other. For both versions the publisher used the same ISBN number, so there is no way to tell which version you'll get when you buy it used. I have purchased several copies on Amazon and it appears the Living Bible edition is more common. I prefer the NIV, so this can be a frustrating experience.

That said, this is a great introductory resource and some good questions and structure to get you thinking about the message of the Scriptures. To utilize it according to the intent, you should plan a good chunk of time to read the Scripture passages in each version as well as write down your answers to the questions. We have also used it as a family Bible study, splitting each session in two, reading and filling out the answers separately and then coming together to discuss. It is suitable for older teens and adults.

This is a great guidebook for the Bach flower remedy practicioner and lay person alike. It consists of a repertory of symptoms and lists the approrpriate remedy for each symptom. I've been using the remedies for a while, and it gave me some interesting new insights. I find that I am constantly consulting this book. This is a must for the library of any serious flower remedy user!

Special reference book for those interested in the Hebrew Old Testament

This is a very specialized sort of reference book. Not many people will have any interest in this sort of thing.

Every single word of every single verse of the Hebrew between Genesis and Joshua is parsed, including verbs, nouns, adverbs, pronouns, and adjectives. The Hebrew text is given along with Owens' translation along with the parsing of each word.

Now and again, there are mistakes in this scholarly work.

This book is designed for a pastor who works with the original languages or for a translator or a commentator. Knowing a little Hebrew is helpful, but not necessary.

Great but not Fully Trustworthy

This is a great set of books for the serious Hebrew student. but not for the Bible teacher or pastor who is rusty on Hebrew.
There are two flaws in these books. One is that the editors have taken so much trouble to give so much information about the structure and meaning of the Hebrew, and yet have provided often mediocre, and even often, lousy, inaccurate translation. They have relied on the RSV, and have stated that where they felt necessary, they have given a more literal meaning. The interesting fact is that in many cases, they have let stand those translations of words which have NO basis in the Hebrew text. They have, in fact, gone beyond dynamic equivalence (conservative paraphrasing), and used straight paraphrashing. Why would one go through so much trouble to get to the root of the langage, and then provide a translation that misses the mark virtually or totally. So keep your Hebrew lexicons available, because you are going to need them.
The second error shows up mainly in the verb descriptions. Just looking at the 7 major verb stems, they are clearly classified in error quite frequently. I have found that this is usually between the Qal and Hiphil stems, and often on weak verbs which loose a consonant (e.g., hollow verbs). The pointing of the text will usually be a clear Hiphil, but the editors have classed it as Qal. This is quite a problem, both for understanding the emphasis of the verb stem, and at times the actual meaning of the verb.
I do not recommend this set except for those who are studying Hebrew seriously, using, for instance, Waltke & O'Connor, Gesensius, and other authoritative works. One without a decent knowledge of Hebrew grammar already in the brain will end up teaching inaccuracy in certain areas.
