Warning! Don't Buy this Book

Please note that the book said that it comes with an Access Code so that you may gain access to the publisher's site for bonus material. However, it doesn't come with any code. I have tried to get help from the publisher but they said that they can't help because Amazon is a seller and they asked me to seek help from Amazon. Here is Amazon's reply: "I have checked into the promotional offer on the publisher's website. While Amazon.com is an authorized dealer of "World of Art, A (6th Edition) [Paperback]" we are not a participating dealer for this particular promotion."

Great introduction to Art

I bought this book for my school course, but unlike most school textbooks I found it very fun and easy to follow, really well laid-out and beautiful enough to leave on the coffee table for non-students to pick up, thumb through and able to appreciate.

Sayre has Created a Masterpiece

For my Art Appreciation course, I had to read The World of Art by Sayre. I fully enjoyed how Sayre has layed out the content in this textbook. The chapters are fairly long, but the content is very interesting and through. Also, the MyArtsLab that goes along with the book is easy. The online chapter quizzes go along almost completely with the text in the book. I was not a big art lover before this book, but after this course and reading this book, I am now an art lover. Thanks to Sayre, I am well versed in the art world.

As IBM�s official liaison to the Ethereum core developers I gave talks on blockchain topics pretty much around the world. After one keynote I was asked for a non-technical guide to understand blockchains. This is it.

The book aims to help you get your head around blockchains in general and around Ethereum specifically. Since Ethereum is currently the pre-imminent blockchain, it makes sense as reference point. The essential stuff is the same for any blockchain.

This text was written for people with a fast grasp, who are not programmers. Reading this should give you the basics to cut through the hype and to identify blockchain opportunities in your professional domain. There are tiny bits of code, which can be admired and skipped.

We�ll look at Ethereum�s benefits first, how it is used and what can be done with it; then explain blockchain machinery, visiting the terms that you�ll be confronted with in every discussion about its application. Exactly what you need to tell the signal from the noise in the echo chamber of honest misunderstandings and desperate marketing.

We take a good hard look at limitations, throw in some history and names and give a realistic outlook.

About the Author

Henning Diedrich has been called IBM's most knowledgeable guy in blockchain, and a thought leader in this field.

He was named architect at the IBM blockchain group, writing the first white paper for IBM's Open Blockchain project and is the official IBM liaison to the Ethereum Foundation's core development teams, helping to harden Ethereum for industrial use.

“I got into blockchain because I became fascinated by the technology, the same as with language design, database architecture or coding in the first place.

In blockchain tech, many domains coalesce that I have worked in. I started programming age 12 hacking computer games, and always remained passionate about performance and whatever resembles 'AI'. I worked in fintech, distributed databases and functional programming, domains that are all of special significance for the future of blockchain at this point. I created a compiler and virtual machine for the insurance industry, which an eternity before it, looked eerily like Bitcoin's VM. I started programming crypto stuff a decade ago.

I am evangelizer for the best distributed, high-velocity database out there, VoltDB, and suffered with them through different stabs at solving distribution. Which is what the blockchain community re-lives right now.

In a way, it's all coming together for me in blockchains. I had to fall for it.“

to the point block chain book

I am a financial professional, not knowing much about block chain and related issues. Very well written, clearly defined terms, even for the non-techie like myself. Enjoyed particularly how the author has pointed out the nuances among bitcon, ethereum, zcash, etc.

Good balance of "dumming down" the subject matter while also being just technical enough in order to grasp the wide implications block chain may have.

I use these post cards to send to my aunt who is in a lock down alzheimer's unit. She was born and raised in the part of Texas which most of these flowers bloom. Seeing these cards I know reminds her of growing up, and she paints wildflowers by looking at these photos.

A book that demonstrates Einstein's search for significance and meaning.

If you love solving puzzles and enjoy reading about such brilliant twentieth-century minds as Albert Einstein, Carl Jung, and Wolfgang Pauli, you are in for a treat with Dr. Walter E. Jacobson's Einstein's Cosmic Journey: A Biographical fantasy of quantum proportions.

To briefly recap some history, Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who revolutionized physics with his general theory of relativity due in large part to his stubborn, independent and audacious spirit. He also introduced a concept known as the unified field theory (UFT) where he attempted to unify the general theory of relativity with electromagnetism. Another of his concepts was the cosmological constant which was to be a modification of his original theory of general relativity to achieve a static universe. Pauli, an Austrian theoretical physicist, was one of the pioneers of quantum physics. Jung was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology. He also believed that the unconscious existed and through dreams we are able to communicate with it as they are not attempts to hide our true feelings from the waking mind but rather they present us with a window to our unconscious.

Jacobson links the ideas and theories of these distinguished individuals into his yarn and moreover has Einstein interact with Pauli and Jung helping him come to terms with the choices he has made during his lifetime as well as solving a mathematical puzzle that has obsessed him for decades. In addition, Jacobson also has a seventy-six year old Einstein invent a dangerous machine that is able to fold time and space that brings him face to face with himself at the age of forty.

As the story unfolds, a frustrated and frail Einstein is discouraged at spending thirty-six years of his life at being unsuccessful in being able to take all the different parts of physics, which are very different and sometimes opposite, and making one theory that explains everything, which is known as the unified field theory (UFT) or as it is sometimes referred to as a uniform field theory. His belief was that the UFT would not only incorporate all the forces of nature into one unified law, but it would provide the basis for a new interpretation of Quantum Mechanics. As he informs his secretary: "I don't care what Quantum Mechanics says! I refuse to believe that reality is based on random, spontaneous chance events! There is order to the universe. There is precision! There is predictability. Based on nature, unalterable physical laws." Was all of this a fruitless pipe dream?

On the other hand, as we are to discover, Einstein struggles with the thought that should he succeed, it would not take too long before Princeton's Chancellor would be on the phone with his Pentagon pals in Washington trying to figure out some way to turn his work into new weapons of destruction.

In passing, as Jacobson states in his Preface and something that should be kept in the back of our our minds, the book is an amalgam of fact and fantasy. Some events actually happened, while others are figments of the author's imagination. However, some of Einstein's spoken words are in fact his own.

This is a book that demonstrates Einstein's search for significance and meaning, which are often depicted as being confused yet at the same time brilliant, and are always painfully honest. Jacobson's objective, as he mentions in the Preface, is to provide his readers with a portrayal of a brilliant, ever-inquiring scientist who was a passionate truth seeker committed to the betterment of humanity. And he has succeeded admirably.

Furthermore, he has presented his readers with several challenging ideas, particularly Einstein's take on war, materialism, the evil spirit of man, the shortcomings as well as the dangers and risks of scientific discoveries, greed, and many others. No doubt, this book could make for an interesting discourse in a college philosophy course.

And although at times I did find some of the scientific commentaries way over my head, nonetheless, I was still able to get the main gist of the book which kept my mind and thoughts in perpetual motion throughout its reading.

I Love This Book

Einstein's Cosmic Journey is a wonderful read - or listen - with the audiobook version. Albert Einstein was - and still is a cultural icon. Everyone knows the face; everyone knows that he developed the theory of relativity - but most of us don't know much about this amazingly complex man. Einstein's Cosmic Journey is just what the title implies, and with this book we are able to share his journey and learn about his life and his relationships with his closest friends and confidants. Walter E. Jacobson has captured and written a very compelling story that reveals Einstein as a man who, like many of us has his insecurities - but strives to live a life full of simple pleasures - like truly warm love for his family and friends, and a wonderfully wicked sense of humor that is often just as profound as the seriousness of his work as a scientific theorist. Do yourself a favor and get this book - and since the holidays are upon us - get two and give one to a friend as a gift. Bottom line - I love this book.

I finished EINSTEIN'S COSMIC JOURNEY by Walter Jacobson a few days ago and I must tell you that I don't remember when I've enjoyed a book more. It was soooo good! The ending was kind of sad but also powerful. I loved the way the author humanized Einstein as well as his wives. He made the experience of Einstein's search for the UNIFIED FIELD THEORY involving and interesting to read, page by page. The transition from Einstein's 76 year-old self to his 40 year-old self, back and forth, was pretty clear and thought-provoking. Time travel, etc. ... who wouldn't want to meet his/her younger self and resolve issues. Sign me up!

Salivating over stairs...

I absolutely love this book. I nearly salivated when I saw the numerous drawings and photos of garden structures and architecture- So I'm a "Structure" guy, not a "plant" guy. My wife literraly told me to stop bothering her because I kept showing her pictures of stairs, walls and pergolas. This really is a tremendous resource. I refer to this book whenever I need a bit of design inspiration. I found the sketches, along with photos, to be tremendously helpful.

Informative and useful...beautiful update of the classic....

First published in 1912 by `Country Life' as GARDENS FOR SMALL COUNTRY HOUSES, ARTS AND CRAFTS GARDENS by Gertrude Jekyll and Lawrence Weaver was republished years later as part of the Antique Collectors Club LTD, and now as a "revised edition with additional colo[u]r illustrations" by the Garden Art Press. More art book than instructive garden guide, the modern publication includes many black and white illustrations as well as layout drawings of the houses and grounds discussed, as well as detailed examples of other features, appearing in the earlier volume, along with beautiful color photos and illustrations depicting specific design elements as they appear today. Thus the reader can determine what the landscaper saw and planned, and how well her design worked then and years later. Jekyll's foresight and intuitive understanding of the "art" of garden design (which many of us learn about the hard way) as illustrated in this book, provides the modern reader with an idea of why Jekyll is still revered among garden designers.

The book title, `Gardens for Small County Houses', may appear ludicrous to the contemporary reader, as it provides an overview of selected examples of various gardens the authors developed in Surrey, Berkshire, and Guildford, which by today's standards are quite large. Chapters cover houses and gardens in their entirety, and at least one covers the "Treatment of Small Sites" such as Cheyne Walk in Chelsea, a gorgeous town house site. Other chapters cover selected design elements, such as "balustrades and walls", "steps and stairways" and retaining walls. Most of these elements are used by modern landscape designers in large public settings and on a few "estates", but many cannot be adapted to the small scale urban garden. Many features of these "country" gardens were lifted from Roman villas and most of us don't own villas, however, some of the elements, such as pergolas, arbors, and trellises can and probably should be adapted to a modern urban garden.

Because you probably wouldn't want to attempt to duplicate these designs on an average modern lot, the value of this book other than as a beautiful art book lies in its ability to inform. You will want to study it before you visit one of the notable "estates" where Jekyll worked in England.

Classic Appeal

This book is a great point of reference for anyone looking for formal garden inspiration. It is wonderful to see the way architecture and garden design can really complement one another so harmoniously. In these cases, neither would be nearly as interesting without the other.

G. Jekyll's garden plans are very interesting to look at. They are giving me many thoughts on good plant combinations & spacing. Also, while her designs are filled with a lot of material, she seems to have a keen eye for leaving space as well.

The attention to detail is wonderful and one can really see the benefit of meticulous planning. Rather than the plant and see what happens approach, it is actually possible to make very deliberate & specific choices.

Now I just want to know who the poor people are who have to do the weeding, watering and pruning in these giant gardens - eeeks!

Eric Brehault

Eric Brehault wrote his very first web pages in 1993, started JavaScript application development in 1998, and is still enjoying it. As an IT engineer, he has used a lot of different serverside technologies, but since 2006, he has been focusing on Plone—a Python open source CMS—and been an active participant of its community. His main contribution has probably been Plomino, a Plonebased application builder. He has also worked on different, modern web mapping solutions such as Leaflet. JavaScript has always been an important part of his work, and he started using CasperJS in 2012 as his favorite testing utility. He developed Resurrectio, a CasperJS test recorder Chrome extension. He works as a technical manager at Makina Corpus—a French open source consulting and development company providing services for web and mobile applications—specifically on environmental issues and in the fields of spatial analysis and data visualization.

Good for starters

I have been trying to learn casper for a while, I knew that it was a great tool to automate my UI testing but their website information is, sadly, not very well organized. This book is a short reference but quite enough to start a very decent test suite. In particular, I learned how to automate web pages interaction (out of a testing context) and how to write test cases that can even interact with jQuery.

I think that one of the things the book lacks of, is the inclusion of additional assertion libraries.

Totally recommended for those, like myself, with no background in casper.

Ground-breaking

Gasparov rules, period. I've always known that, I just regret there are not too many people with the capacity to appreciate it.
First, he seems to be about the only major scholar advocating a scientific approach to humanities, especially to the study of literature.
Second, this book is the one and only history of Indo-European versification from its mysterious proto-sources to the avant-garde of today.
Third, its scope and wealth of information is simply amazing.
Fourth, as anything written by Gasparov, this book is lucid and accessible even for a person without any special interest in versification as a separate branch of poetics.
There are minor flaws, which any specialist in any particular language or verse might notice; but there is no one possessing this breadth of knowledge and such grasp of the matter.
Last but not least, there are such kids' questions as "why poetry exists at all" and "what is the difference between poetry and prose"? "Serious" scholars are afraid to ask them or tackle them - more for fear of defeat than because of anything else; Gasparovs answers them elegantly and effortlessly.
A very ambitious, and very successful opus.

Terry Eagleton is a British professor of Literature who has written an excellent, quotable and recondite account of English Literature from the seventeenth through the twentieth century to today!

Eagleton's book is not for the novice unfamiliar with the works he discusses. The book would serve well in a college course on English literature. As an English major and lifelong reader of English Literature I would recommend the book highly.
