Powerful, Wise and Honest

What a great title for this powerful, wise and courageously honest book. I couldn't put it down from its great opening line, "At first I didn't know I was depressed; I thought I was just religious." to its concluding line, "And we can acknowledge that this life is not all there is: we have a context, and it is not just historical and not just physical; it is eternal."

This book includes a variety of voices to speak for themselves and give testimony to the shades of depression as well as address its apparent meaninglessness.

Barbara speaks perceptively to the special pitfalls of clergy who go
through depression in her chapter titled "Charged with the Care of Souls". This should be required reading for all clergy; it is experienced and wise.

There is a wonderful chapter, "Words Fail Me" which explains the use of Centering Prayer as helpful when words are empty.

This special book sorts out pious religious drivel from a substantive understanding of medical intervention and how God can redeem the pain. "Jesus Wept" makes me feel understood, and helps me understand my own crippling bout with depression several years ago. It is a treasure trove of wisdom, honesty and helpful tools. It is a book sorely needed by millions as both educational as well as solid food for the soul.

The night that my first child was born, I remember calling my mother with the good news; she herself had news of her own. She had just been admitted to the hospital for clinical depression at the age of sixty-two. We couldn't have known it at the time, but that night was the start of a long, slow slide that didn't end until twenty years later when she died. My mother was a compliant patient with her doctors, and many people of faith and family prayed for her, but no treatments or medications ever freed her from her darkness.

Clinical depression is horrible for anyone, but as Barbara Crafton shows in her wise book, it presents extra conundrums for people of faith. Many try in vain to pray it away. Others search for some didactic purpose sent by God. Some attribute the plague to demons, whether real or figurative. The pious platitudes are endless. Well-meaning friends can suggest that taking medications constitutes a lack of faith. The victim experiences their own sense of shame and feelings that their faith is a fraud. And how to stop those harsh voices inside your head?

Crafton combines the personal and the professional to good effect in this short book. She's served as an Episcopal priest for thirty years, and she's suffered as a victim of depression. She takes a nuanced and careful position toward her subject. We know the constellation of factors that can surround depression, like overwork, lack of exercise, brain chemistry, family history, and traumas; but we also know that for many sufferers, depression remains uninvited and inexplicable, no matter what they try. Symptoms are deeply personal and vary widely, and so do the "ideological molds into which individual experiences of depression are poured" (83).

Crafton writes at length and with candor about her own experiences of depression as a person of faith and a counselor to parishioners; she also includes extensive descriptions by other victims of depression. She explores the dark night of the soul, family history, suicide, electro-convulsive therapy, Mother Teresa's profound darkness in the book Come Be My Light (2007), and centering prayer. In her view, there is no reason to separate or place in conflict divine aid and human therapy. What people of depression need, she says, are both compassionate truth-tellers and competent care givers. Avoid quacks of faith and medicine. This is a wise book that I highly recommend, along with several others: Against Depression (2005) by Peter Kramer, Acedia and Me (2008) by Kathleen Norris, and Kathryn Greene-McCreight's Darkness Is My Only Companion; A Christian Response to Mental Illness (2006).

Barbara Crafton's writing is always spiritually and psychologically deep, warm and approachable, insightful and relevant, and packed with images of New York or New Jersey or Florence in a way that invites the reader right into her space in those places. In Jesus Wept, she combines her own experience of serious depression with the wisdom of people over the centuries, from St. John of the Cross to Gerald May, as she addresses the issues that people of faith are inclined to struggle with when they encounter darkness rather than joy in their lives. The book is both easy to read and profound, equally good for a person who is experiencing depression and trying to sort out questions of faith, and for a person close to the depressed individual.

The armament section illustrates and details not only the characteristics of the many and varied weapons used in China, many seen nowhere else, but also their acquisition and such local production as was undertaken. This is complemented by a chapter on the arsenals and their evolution and production programs.

The Chinese army was one of the largest of the war and it, and Japan's, fought longer than any other. It faced unique challenges, including fragmented loyalties, huge expanses of territory, poor logistics networks, inadequate arms supplies, and, often, incompetence and corruption. Nevertheless, they fought bravely in major battles through 1941 and were able to counterpunch effectively in important regions through the rest of the war. Aimed at both military historians and wargamers, this work fills an important gap in our understanding of this, the most under-appreciated army of the war.

Probably more information than I'll ever need

After reading the description, it's all I hoped for & very likely more information than I'll ever need on the subject. Even in the smaller 6x9" size it's a hefty book. The paper is even good quality. The only thing I might wish to change is the overall size so many of the pictures could be printed larger & hard covers.

About the Author
Larry Elterman was born in Boston Massachusetts and grew up in the Boston area. He attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated with a combined degree in mathematics and computer science. As an adult he was a software engineer and lived the typical American baby boomer yuppie life style. That is, until he decided to start a new life, a new adventure – in the Philippines.

"A Man's Guide to...." is the indespensible guide

I am recently retired and widowed and started planning to visit the Philippines in Fall, 2009. Like the first reviewer in this section I bought four books on the Philippines: a good guide book (Lonely Planet); Culture Shock, by A. Roces; A Long Way to Go for a Date; and Elterman's singularly unique guide book. I agree with Howp's views on the first three. But I am even more bullish on Elterman's book than Howp was...and I have now been in the Philippines for 6 weeks of a 12 week stay. I have three goals in being here. I want a warm place to winter every year, Jan to May; a good place for diving, snorkeling and sailing; and, hopefully to find a long term partner or wife. Any good guide book will get you around in the Philippines because the people are very friendly and helpful and most speak English. But Eltermans's book is indispensible. It contains practical information on almost every important aspect for someone with interests similar to mine. I am pretty tech savy but I found the section on cell phones and texting saved me time and frustration. And his explanation of the importance of texting and how to use it is helpful for anyone of any age wanting to meet and date Filipinas. Other sections on housing,transportation, getting an extended visa are also useful, going beyond a standard guidebook.

But the book's really strong suit is providing information on how to meet and date Filipina women. Elterman creates a typology of types of Filipina women who may be willing to date foreigners that has helped me manage a confusing situation. And he managed to do so while describing Filipino people in a positive and respectful manner which they certainly deserve. Any typology is just that, an abstraction and all real people are more complex than any description. But the guide provides rich and accurate description (in my limited experience) and subtle suggestions that are helpful to any foreigner who is seeking to date a Filipina or find a wife or companion regardless of age or how long they have been here. And Elterman does so in a fun and readable manner. I find myself consulting this unique book on a weekly basis.

This book is full of valuable advice, definitely worth the money!
Reading was enjoyable, I started it and didn't put it down until the end
I am married to a Filipina for 25 years in Australia, and have visited the Philippines many times
Still, I laerned a thing or two from the book!
The only negative aspect are frequent spelling mistakes (get a better proof reader, Larry!)

Imperfect but very good

Some information in this book is not 100% correct, but I think it is an excellent effort and a very useful book. The main error I recall is that the author says a fiancee visa gives you 6 months to get to know your prospective spouse... in reality the time period is 90 days and the U.S. government specifically says that it is NOT supposed to be an introductory period but rather the final checks and arrangements on somebody you are already committed to marrying. It is a bit hard to understand how the author missed the mark like that on something so very central to what this book is about.

Also I wonder if the author hasn't been doing some rationalizing or wishful thinking on the subject of how completely accepted the young Filipina/old American relationship is in the Philippines. I was just over there and saw the 19/55 combinations and I was told they are viewed with a mixture of pity and displeasure... and the topic of considerable gossip. Well, maybe the person telling me that had motives to do so... I don't know.

One thing the author didn't hit was the subject of tipping. I have 3 books on the Philippines so far and none clearly state what the normal custom is there. I mean I'm sure they are happy to take my money, but do Filipinos usually tip at restaurants, and how much?

Another thing the book should have covered is diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. All the travel books and the U.S. government recommend drugs to protect from malaria for tourists, but I'm sure the native people are not taking any such drugs. What is the consensus among expats living in the country? Surely the expense and side effects of the drugs make it nearly impossible for long-term residents to continue taking them. A little insight here would have been really nice.

But overall I liked the book. The author comes across as a fairly decent person, and the book seems packed with useful information and good advice. I felt it was like having a long chat with a very knowledgeable yet regular guy.

Not Excellent, But Well Worth a Read

Let me say first that I am a professor of public policy, but I like to read "popular social science" that is well-grounded in real evidence and data, such as Women Don't Ask, The Big Sort, Bowling Alone, etc. I found Viking Economics very interesting and an easy read and I was glad I read it. It is thought-provoking and leads to mulling about the US economic structure. But, the chapter I was looking forward to the most--the one on whether we could do this in the US and, if so, how--was the weakest, and that disappointed me. I do recommend this book, and in fact have passed it along to my dad so that we can talk about it. But it's weaker than I wish--but I'm also not the standard audience, I'm sure. Read it, enjoy it, think about it--but don't expect too much.

"Michael Harris does a great job on this book. In this book he recommends the view camera (instead of the typical 35mm). This book isn't really going to teach all aspects of how to use this camera or the equipment. However, there is pretty good coverage concerning lights and how to correct color with filters. He also gives a really good run down on what equipment to buy, composition, and different types of film.

If you want to learn a lot about architectural photography and its equipment, this is a really good book. If you want lots of specifics on view cameras, you'll need a different book." Reviewer from Amazon.com 5 star review

I am disappointed with this book it is very dated. Talks mostly about film was last updated in 2003 does not deal at all with digital photography let alone HDR it was of absolutely no help to me. Equipment recommendations are large format camera and other associated studio types of lighting, and filters. Glad I only rented it.

The author is very well-structured and approached the set out of the material (starting from the selection of equipment till the "pitfalls." I'm a little sad that in Russia there was no such author, who would describes the process of Professional (!!!) interior phoography. I'm happy to have such a book.

It's Just What the Title Says!

This book is a very useful and informative. It does a very good job of covering what makes professional interior photography work. Definitely a book for advanced amateurs or professionals. Would be great for a professional who is expanding their scope of work to include interior photography or who is looking for techniques or useful ideas. Harris does a very good job of describing appropriate camera and lighting equipment, lighting techniques, color correction processes, etc. The book is pretty much up-to-date and covers digital photography reasonably well. It is a very "hands-on" book from someone who obviously knows what they are doing. I probably would not recommend this to "snapshot" photographers, you might not get too much out of it.

About the Author
Benton Rain Patterson was formerly an associate editor of The Saturday Evening Post, an articles editor for The New York Times Magazine, editor of Dominion magazine and managing editor of Guideposts magazine. He is emeritus associate professor of journalism at the University of Florida in Gainesville and author of the book Write to Be Read. Coleman E.P. Patterson is associate dean of the Kelley College of Business and associate professor of management at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas

As a new editor I found this book invaluable in its perspective, insights, and practical advice. It enabled me to see other magazines in a new way and subsequently gave me the groundwork for confidence and creativity in my own work.

Might be good for beginners

Before I was promoted to editor in chief, I was a books editor for 3 years. This book didn't teach me much that I didn't already know. Might be good for beginners, but not for folks who've been working as editors for a while. I regret buying it and it's highly overpriced. People will learn more reading articles from the internet for free.

Risking All to Heal

This story is the start of a serial and does end in a cliff hanger so be warned. This is the start of Kierra's journey to healing of her mind and spirit as she has never really recovered from a vicious attack. The timing seems to be right for Chandler to step in and in days accomplish so much for her. But we see her struggle to keep things in "professional" manner and not let her heart engage but we also see a glimpse that things might not be so cut and dried for Chandler either as she is very different from his usually partners. I'll be honest abrupt cliff-hanger endings are usually a turn off but because this story is so rich and engaging I can't wait for the next installment. This is not a short part of a book but a full book that truly is a complete 1st step in these people's lives. I truly feel invested in the characters.

I'm not normally a fan of "naughty" books but this one pulled me into the story line! I couldn't put it down. I was shocked by the end which irritates me only because now I have to wait for the second book to come out, so hurry up! I must admit I'm secretly hoping for a little bit more from Keira and Daniel I am a fan for sure and would recommend this book to anyone and everyone
