Star Surgeon, by Alan Nourse

The shuttle plane from the port of Philadelphia to Hospital Seattle had already gone when Dal Timgar arrived at the loading platform, even though he had taken great pains to be at least thirty minutes early for the boarding.
“You’ll just have to wait for the next one,” the clerk at the dispatcher’s desk told him unsympathetically. “There’s nothing else you can do.”
“But Ican’twait,” Dal said. “I have to be in Hospital Seattle by morning.” He pulled out the flight schedule and held it under the clerk’s nose. “Look there! The shuttle wasn’t supposed to leave for another forty-five minutes!”
The clerk blinked at the schedule, and shrugged. “The seats were full, so it left,” he said. “Graduation time, you know. Everybody has to be somewhere else, right away. The next shuttle goes in three hours.”
“But I had a reservation on this one,” Dal insisted.
“Don’t be silly,” the clerk said sharply. “Only graduatescan get reservations this time of year—” He broke off to stare at Dal Timgar, a puzzled frown on his face. “Let me see that reservation.”
Dal fumbled in his pants pocket for the yellow reservation slip. He was wishing now that he’d kept his mouth shut. He was acutely conscious of the clerk’s suspicious stare, and suddenly he felt extremely awkward. The Earth-cut trousers had never really fit Dal very well; his legs were too long and spindly, and his hips too narrow to hold the pants up properly. The tailor in the Philadelphia shop had tried three times to make a jacket fit across Dal’s narrow shoulders, and finally had given up in despair. Now, as he handed the reservation slip across the counter, Dal saw the clerk staring at the fine gray fur that coated the back of his hand and arm. “Here it is,” he said angrily. “See for yourself.”
The clerk looked at the slip and handed it back indifferently. “It’s a valid reservation, all right, but there won’t be another shuttle to Hospital Seattle for three hours,” he said, “unless you have a priority card, of course.”
“No, I’m afraid I don’t,” Dal said. It was a ridiculous suggestion, and the clerk knew it. Only physicians in the Black Service of Pathology and a few Four-star Surgeons had the power to commandeer public aircraft whenever they wished. “Can I get on the next shuttle?”
“You can try,” the clerk said, “but you’d better be ready when they start loading. You can wait up on the ramp if you want to.”
Dal turned and started across the main concourse of the great airport. He felt a stir of motion at his side, and looked down at the small pink fuzz-ball sitting in the crook of his arm. “Looks like we’re out of luck, pal,” he said gloomily. “If we don’t get on the next plane, we’ll miss the hearing altogether. Not that it’s going to do us much good to be there anyway.”
The little pink fuzz-ball on his arm opened a pair of black shoe-button eyes and blinked up at him, and Dal absently stroked the tiny creature with a finger. The fuzz-ball quivered happily and clung closer to Dal’s side as he started up the long ramp to the observation platform. Automatic doors swung open as he reached the top, and Dal shivered in the damp night air. He could feel the gray fur that coated his back and neck rising to protect him from the coldness and dampness that his body was never intended by nature to endure…

Review
His novel The Bladerunner lent its name to the Blade Runner movie, but no other aspects of its plot or characters, which were taken from Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? In the late 1970s an attempt to adapt The Bladerunner for the screen was made, with Beat Generation author William S. Burroughs commissioned to write a story treatment; no film was ever developed but the story treatment was later published as the novella, Blade Runner (a movie).

About the Author
Alan Edward Nourse was an American science fiction (SF) author and physician. He wrote both juvenile and adult science fiction, as well as nonfiction works about medicine and science.

Fond memories
By David C. Hill
Alan Nourse was one of my favorite sf authors as a youth, and, unlike some other authors I read at the time, his work still stands up. Being an MD, he writes good "medical sf," and this was one of my favorite works of his.

Believable and Entertaining
By A Customer
I found the star surgeon's character well developed by the author. The detail provided of the surgeon's thoughts and feelings were more then enough to enable me to strongly identify with him and the plot had plenty of variety to keep the story interesting. I read this in about 1964 while in the 7th grade and greatly enjoyed it.

National Bestseller

Ian McEwan’s symphonic novel of love and war, childhood and class, guilt and forgiveness provides all the satisfaction of a brilliant narrative and the provocation we have come to expect from this master of English prose.

On a hot summer day in 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis witnesses a moment’s flirtation between her older sister, Cecilia, and Robbie Turner, the son of a servant and Cecilia’s childhood friend. But Briony’ s incomplete grasp of adult motives–together with her precocious literary gifts–brings about a crime that will change all their lives. As it follows that crime’s repercussions through the chaos and carnage of World War II and into the close of the twentieth century, Atonement engages the reader on every conceivable level, with an ease and authority that mark it as a genuine masterpiece.

Amazon.com Review
Ian McEwan's Booker Prize-nominated Atonement is his first novel since Amsterdam took home the prize in 1998. But while Amsterdam was a slim, sleek piece, Atonement is a more sturdy, more ambitious work, allowing McEwan more room to play, think, and experiment.

We meet 13-year-old Briony Tallis in the summer of 1935, as she attempts to stage a production of her new drama "The Trials of Arabella" to welcome home her older, idolized brother Leon. But she soon discovers that her cousins, the glamorous Lola and the twin boys Jackson and Pierrot, aren't up to the task, and directorial ambitions are abandoned as more interesting prospects of preoccupation come onto the scene. The charlady's son, Robbie Turner, appears to be forcing Briony's sister Cecilia to strip in the fountain and sends her obscene letters; Leon has brought home a dim chocolate magnate keen for a war to promote his new "Army Ammo" chocolate bar; and upstairs, Briony's migraine-stricken mother Emily keeps tabs on the house from her bed. Soon, secrets emerge that change the lives of everyone present....

The interwar, upper-middle-class setting of the book's long, masterfully sustained opening section might recall Virginia Woolf or Henry Green, but as we move forward--eventually to the turn of the 21st century--the novel's central concerns emerge, and McEwan's voice becomes clear, even personal. For at heart, Atonement is about the pleasures, pains, and dangers of writing, and perhaps even more, about the challenge of controlling what readers make of your writing. McEwan shouldn't have any doubts about readers of Atonement: this is a thoughtful, provocative, and at times moving book that will have readers applauding. --Alan Stewart, Amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly
This haunting novel, which just failed to win the Booker this year, is at once McEwan at his most closely observed and psychologically penetrating, and his most sweeping and expansive. It is in effect two, or even three, books in one, all masterfully crafted. The first part ushers us into a domestic crisis that becomes a crime story centered around an event that changes the lives of half a dozen people in an upper-middle-class country home on a hot English summer's day in 1935. Young Briony Tallis, a hyperimaginative 13-year-old who sees her older sister, Cecilia, mysteriously involved with their neighbor Robbie Turner, a fellow Cambridge student subsidized by the Tallis family, points a finger at Robbie when her young cousin is assaulted in the grounds that night; on her testimony alone, Robbie is jailed. The second part of the book moves forward five years to focus on Robbie, now freed and part of the British Army that was cornered and eventually evacuated by a fleet of small boats at Dunkirk during the early days of WWII. This is an astonishingly imagined fresco that bares the full anguish of what Britain in later years came to see as a kind of victory. In the third part, Briony becomes a nurse amid wonderfully observed scenes of London as the nation mobilizes. No, she doesn't have Robbie as a patient, but she begins to come to terms with what she has done and offers to make amends to him and Cecilia, now together as lovers. In an ironic epilogue that is yet another coup de the tre, McEwan offers Briony as an elderly novelist today, revisiting her past in fact and fancy and contributing a moving windup to the sustained flight of a deeply novelistic imagination. With each book McEwan ranges wider, and his powers have never been more fully in evidence than here. Author tour. (Mar. 19)Forecast: McEwan's work has been building a strong literary readership, and the brilliantly evoked prewar and wartime scenes here should extend that; expect strong results from handselling to the faithful. The cover photo of a stately English home nicely establishes the novel's atmosphere

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Set during the seemingly idyllic summer of 1935 at the country estate of the Tallis family, the first section of this thought-provoking novel ambles through one scorchingly hot day that changes the lives of almost everyone present. The catalyst is overly imaginative 13-year-old Briony, who accuses Robbie, her sister's childhood friend and their housemaid's son, of raping her cousin Lola. The young man is sent to prison and Cecilia, heartbroken, abandons her family and becomes a nursing sister in London. In the second part, McEwan vividly describes another single day, this time Robbie's experiences during the ignominious British retreat to Dunkirk early in World War II. Finally, readers meet Briony again, now a nursing student. She is aware that she might have been wrong that day five years earlier and begins to seek atonement, having clearly ruined two lives. In a story within a story, McEwan brilliantly engages readers in a tour de force of what ifs and might have beens until they begin to wonder what actually happened. The story is compelling, the characters well drawn and engaging, and the outcome is almost always in doubt. The descriptions of the retreat and the subsequent hospitalization of the soldiers are grim and realistic. Readers are spared little, yet the journey is worth the observed pain and distress. Well-read teens will find much to think about in this novel.

More torment than atonement
By I.
This was one of those novels I found brilliantly written, but incredibly boring.
I had, probably, expectations way to high, so I was very disappointed with the book. It drags for an insufferable amount of time and when it comes to the big revelation it amounted to nothing. It works better in the movie, but even then, it had no impact in me.

There are, of course, things that I liked and left me torn regarding the rating I would give this book. I loved the use that Ian McEwan makes of language. The way he masters long sentences, which is not very common in English language. I liked the idea of the different views of the same fact by the different characters and the way that propels the narrative, but I also thought that, in general, the book ended up being quite boring and excessively descriptive.

There is no spoon
By Moisio
Atonement reminded me so much of The French Lieutenant's Woman, in terms of the games that the author and the narrator play with the reader, that I had to do a bit of internet research. Apparently, both books can be read as historiographic metafiction, which is a term coined by critic Linda Hutcheon. The first word in the phrase refers to the imposition of the present on history and the second refers to self-reflexive narrative techniques that call into question all "facts," even those living only within the confines of the books' plots. Put them together and you get novels in which the author, the narrator and other characters may be conspiring to undermine the "facts" of history, as well as those of the story itself.

Needless to say, then, that Atonement is supremely concerned with the role of the author. The reader is led to believe early on that thirteen year old Briony Tallis is a self-conscious and compulsive writer. But her role in the unfolding events develops as the line separating reality from her fertile imagination becomes blurred.

The story (or the "plot"), even if we take it at face value, is compelling enough in its tragedy. But the real merit of the book becomes apparent as the veils fall. It is difficult to say much more without spoiling things. But, after reading this review, anyone familiar with Fowles' novel will be watching for the judgements the reader is ultimately asked to make.

A masterpiece
By Tom
I was completely absorbed by this book. The first part draws you into a confined setting, a very hot day in a country house and the preparations for welcoming the son of the house who is about to arrive with a friend. It lets you see the scene from the perspectives of the different characters in the house. Although McEwan focuses more on the internal lives of the characters than on external events, and devotes most of the attention to their impressions and reflections on what takes place around them, you feel the tension building steadily towards what certainly must become a disaster. The second part describes the dire consequences of these events, which grow out of the lively imagination of a young girl who half sees and half imagines what is happening in the house and tries, with good intentions, to put things right. McEwan ties everything together beautifully and elegantly in the last part where the young girl has grown old and has spent all the intervening years trying to reconcile herself with what she did as a child. I don't want to spoil anyone's reading experience by giving details. The book was rather different from what I had expected based on the descriptions, but it is certainly one of the better books that I have read. It is warmly recommended.

Review
Victoria Howard has written a fascinating romantic novel set in Washington State's San Juan Islands. Despite a former, disastrous love affair with a US naval officer, London-based Skye Dunbar decides to rent a cabin on one of the islands in an attempt to face her inner demons and lay the past to rest. But she doesn't bargain on meeting Jedediah Walker, a marine biologist, who reawakens feelings she had thought she would never experience again. From the first time they meet, it is hate at first sight, undermined by the sizzling chemistry that neither Walker nor Skye can suppress. The intense physical attraction felt by the feuding couple is not the only chemical reaction occurring on the island. Dead fish with high levels of toxic chemicals are turning up on the island's beaches. Walker's computer contains important data about the rising level of chemicals in and around the bay. When a hacker breaks into the computer, he suspects that Skye might be involved, especially when he finds out that she is a computer software designer. Their relationship worsens considerably, exacerbated by the arrival on the island of Skye's business partner John Ridge, who has been in love with Skye since the first day they met. Eventually, Skye is forced to make a choice between the two men. But whom will she choose? "Three Weeks Last Spring" is an absorbing story that will be loved by all romantic novel readers. --Shelagh Watkins

How did this drivel get published?
By Aunt Peggy
Dreadful.

I purchased this book because the setting and the premise sounded promising.

I disliked it nearly from the beginning, but kept reading, just to see if it would improve at all. It did not.

The characters are all one-dimensional. The heroine is shallow and whiny, and I cannot imagine her in the role of co-owner of an internationally respected computer software firm at all. The hero is such a bully, and flip flops between lusting after the heroine and brutalizing her so often and quickly that he reads as insane.

What is it about British authors that they are so fascinated by domineering men who verbally and physically abuse their women? Most of us left this horrible world behind back in the 1960s, and it's not even interesting as a fantasy story. This hero is coming off as a Neanderthal much of the time.

And, like at least one other reviewer, I'm completely offended by the author's statements about American women (and why we have trouble with relationships, apparently). What an incredible insult to an entire nation of women.

In some ways, this reads as someone's early draft of the novel with no details and little dialogue filled in. Too many times I would realize that I'd read 3 or 4 pages that had been composed entirely of stage directions. "He did this. Then he did that. He thought this. He realized that. He left. She picked up the phone. She did something else. She wondered about something. She went to sleep. Four days later, she wondered if he would ever call." Dull, dull, dull......

In addition, when there IS dialogue involved, the author can't seem to decide whether her characters are using American or British English, and their voices are all over the map. And while, perhaps her British characters sound normal for 1999 (I spent a LOT of time in London in the late 90's, and I don't think so, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt.) when her American characters speak they seem to be using terminology and slang that came out of 1940s films. Who doesn't use contractions these days? Who uses the word 'stevedore' twice in one paragraph? UGH!!!!!!! The dialogue was just abysmal!!!!!!!!

There are plenty of inconsistencies and jolts in the basic storytelling as well. How did the heroine go off to take a hot shower when her rented cabin was still without electricity following the storm? And more than once, the author would skip over hours, or even days, without any warning to the reader (I think that this a mostly a Kindle formatting problem, but it was completely disconcerting).

This book is in serious need of professional editing and formatting. In the first 20% of the book I found several grammatical errors, including 'where' when she wanted to use 'were', and 'its' for 'it's'. My lord, even your average word processing program should pick those up, these days. Was this written on a Selectric?

I have nothing good to say about this book, except that I've finished it. (Okay, not really, but I've finally quit torturing myself by reading it.)

An absorbing romantic story
By Shelagh Watkins

Annoying waste of time
By lizzy
Plot concept sounded interesting, but ended up unbelievable. Any company with the type of contracts that Walker's environmental company had would be required to have redundant data security measures and backups.

But why did Skye have to go to the San Juan Islands to get away; that was never explained. And why was she just so rude to Walker initially; did she think she rented the whole island?

Shallow and twisted interpretation of love. Users and abusers. Sex scene gratuitous.

Unbelievable characters; Skye as written could only be successful due to her nurturing, loving, mentoring business partner. She does not treat him well.

By the end, I did not like or respect either of the main characters, so maybe they deserved each other.

Poor editing throughout was so annoying, that I would have requested a refund if it hadn't been free.

Completed on:02/24/2016Review Rating:5 stars!Reviewed By Patricia Day for Readers' Favorite

Homeward Highway by Lewis B. Hunter follows the travels of Lester Eugene Oliver. The day his wife leaves him for another man propels Lester into an emotional dive. Never an extrovert, his pride suffers a hit below the belt, and he quickly realizes his life no longer appeals to him. Change is demanded, but he feels inadequate to determine what he should do. The day comes when he takes a step totally alien to him. He leaves everything behind, buys a Harley, and takes off with no particular destination planned. He just wants out! He wants to get rid of the awful empty feeling of unworthiness.

His journey leads him into various situations, some precarious and all amidst very colorful characters. Each one shows him a life that he could easily take on and those to avoid. What he learns along the way is that his life still has value, and he needs to determine where his trust should be given. He becomes more comfortable the further he travels, and eventually succumbs to a need to be back, to reconnect with his daughters at least.

Initially reading this story, I felt it was a book that only a male would enjoy. There are some segments where morals slide. However, the journey is not only for Lester to travel because the reader comes to know him too. Perhaps, like me, you will find him very likable and his inevitable choice of new friends is very acceptable. Lots of Southern charm, along with characters that would force anyone to make rapid decisions to keep their self-respect and values intact. A good story with some mature scenes and language.

Well written. Could be called The Journey of Self Discovery. The author knows motorcycles and touring. The people Leo meets along the way are mostly friendly and helpful, just like most of the people you meet on an actual tour. They are also interesting if you take the time like Leo did to listen to them.
I really liked the way the author described many of the roads that Leo traveled. I've been on many of them and the descriptions were accurate enough to bring back memories. The plot wasn't fantastic but it was believable and was low key overall with just enough excitement thrown in to keep things moving. Its easy to get into this book and just enjoy the ride.

By Murel Mize
I started out a little skeptical about the book because I have never rode a motor bike on a long trip. It became more interesting as each time I read greater lengths. Soon I became the character " Leo " and I could not put it down until I had finished the book. It was a great read that helped me understand some troubling parts of my life.

Far more than a simple motorcycle journey, it's a trip into the very best of becoming comfortable with who you are.
By Lakey Cornelius
I found this to be a very enjoyable and enlightening book. The characters are easy to relate to, and the main character Leo quickly becomes someone you identify with as he takes a long look at his past. I enjoyed the way the author makes some very reflective insights into who we are and how we became the people we are. Those realizations are perfectly balanced with humor and humility in the nature of the main character and the friends he made as he found himself on the journey. This turned out to be far more than a book about a motorcycle journey. It was a journey into the adventure of discovering yourself and how to allow yourself to relax and make the most of your relationships with family and friends.

Bridging the gap between theory and practice, Hackney and Bernard’sThe Professional Counseloroffers a solid grounding in counseling skills and an understanding of how these skills are used within different therapy orientations, including affective, cognitive, behavioral, and systemic domains. It presents students with a four-stage model of counseling which shows them how to assess client problems, develop counseling goals, define strategies and select interventions, and terminate and evaluate the counseling relationship. The new co-author of this edition, Janine M. Bernard, brings her expertise in clinical supervision to help deconstruct the counseling process for learners, resulting in effective editing of all chapters in this edition. Alsoincluded is a discussion of the application of counseling interventions to Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Motivation Interviewing, so that students can appreciate that skills are not distinct from therapy approaches they will use in their clinical courses. Included are new case examples drawing from different specialties within counseling, and more than 40 new web-based video samples illustrating the content of the book.

Personalize learning with MyCounselingLab

MyCounselingLab is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with the text to engage students and improve results. Within its structured environment, students see key concepts demonstrated through video clips, practice what they learn, test their understanding, and receive feedback to guide their learning and ensure they master key learning outcomes.

An invaluable resource for all parents and educators
By Rebecca E.
I've often wondered if one of my children had sensory processing disorder or if he was just "sensitive." Sensory is a confusing topic, and there are a lot of terms thrown around, such as sensory integration, sensory integration, sensory seeking...I could never make sense of all of it - until this book!

Chock full of information and put together amazingly well, this book describes the sensory systems in detail. The authors discuss what healthy sensory systems look like, and what problems with each sensory system looks like as well. You get the viewpoint of both a therapist and a parent/educator.

Are you wondering if your child has a real problem or if he's just going through a phase? Chapter 9 gives you 3 signs to look for, red flag behaviors, and a handy checklist!

My very favorite part of this book is the activities section! There are several sensory activities for every sensory system! These activities look amazing, and I know I'll be referencing this section a lot!

Finally, the cheat sheets and index of behaviors are great. Have a child who always uses the "outside voice" or covers their ears when there is noise or dislikes being dirty? You can find the answers you're looking for quickly in the index.

This is an invaluable resource for all parents and educators!

Must have book for parents and teachers!
By jennifer
Where on Earth was this book when I first found out my child has sensory issues? This book seriously explains the issues in such an organized way so it is easy to understand. I love that it is told from 2 perspectives... the therapist so I can read the technical way things work and the parent perspective so I feel like I am not alone! I highly recommend this book to parents who suspect a loved one may have sensory issues. I am also a teacher and I as I am reading this book I am making lots of connections with experiences I have had with students in the past. Very powerful book for teachers whether you have students with diagnosed sensory issues or not (because they are in your class even if you don't have a diagnosis.)

Think you know all there is to know about Sensory? Guess again! Great for Beginners through Experts!
By Deetdewgirl
This book is like the Sensory Bible! I LOVE how it explains Sensory Processing, gives TONS of great sensory activities, and the additional resources are insanely handy for everyday life! My son has SPD so I'm no newbie to understanding sensory theory, but I found myself learning even more and finding ways to communicate it to others in a way that makes sense to everyone! I thought I'd seen every sensory activity under the sun, but I was wrong! This book is a blessing to ALL kids, not just those with SPD!
