About the Author

Dr Qiuyu Wang is a Senior Research Fellow at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Her major research interest is in cancer biology and stem cell biology. She teaches many aspects of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and is co-editor of Biomedical Science Practice (OUP, 2010).

Dr Chris Smith was formerly a Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry at the Manchester Metropolitan University, where he taught biochemistry and cell & molecular biology at all levels. He has written and edited several undergraduate texts, including contributions to Biomedical Science Practice (OUP, 2010) and Clinical Biochemistry (OUP, 2010).

This is the real "how to" of improving throughput

I love this book. I have given many copies to factories which are struggling. I know that some people have trouble seeing how to translate this novel-style presentation into action, but the concepts are great. Finding Herbie has become a way of life in many industrial situations. If you are in a production environment or quality control, do yourself a favor and take a few hours to read this one.

In a typical modern manufacturing environment, we run MRP (Materials Requirements Planning) to load (push) the factory. Or in a more advanced plant, we run JIT to let the market 'pull' inventory.
Mr Goldratt outlines an in-between which is based on the bottlenect of the plant: Operations in front of the constraint is being 'pulled' by it; and those behind it are being 'pushed' by it, and the pulling process is synchronized by the constraint so that no unnecessary WIP is released to the floor. With a QC process right in front of the constraint, we can make sure that the factory is not losing non-recoverable valuable time and materials. This book forces you to see the bigger picture and forget about individual resource centers. If you are running at a less than desirable inventory turnover rate, this book will enlighten you. - Ignatius Wong

An "encyclopedia" of WWII German Weapons

After reading several books written by Joseph Farrell, I became interested in the various technologies developed by Germans during WWII. The one that really caught my attention was the story of the "Wunderwaffe." This book was cited within one of Farrell's own writings, so I decided to purchase it and read the story myself. When I received this book, I realized this book was a lot more in depth and well researched that I previously conceived. I was expecting a short book written by some unknown, who heard it from an anonymous individual, who revealed information in vague riddles. This book was the exact opposite. "The Truth About The Wunderwaffe" is the most researched book I have ever read on advanced WWII weaponry.

The book is split up into three large parts. Part 1 is titled "Weapons of a Technological Turning-Point." Here, Witkowkski spends a great deal of time discussing the "V" series rockets, new jet bomber planes, and gives an overview of new, conventional weapon concepts. He discusses potential death rays, sound cannons, and all sorts of weapons that could be used for blitzkrieg.
The second part of this book is titled "The Weapons, Which Could Change The Course of War". In this section, the author discusses the numerous guided weapons the Nazis were developing. Near the end of this part, he discusses the new types of biological and chemical weapons the Nazis were manufacturing and experimenting with. Finally, the third part of this book is titled "Kriegsentscheidend." This is the epic conclusion that I was looking for. The author examines, in detail, what the true wunderwaffe. He discusses the Nazi "Bell" and the amazing accounts of its effects. To wrap everything up, Witkowski includes a hypothetical plan that Hitler was going to use to win the second World War.

After reading this book, I was truly amazed at the kind of work that a serious researcher can produce. Witkowski leads the reader on a journey through the secret weapons research department of Nazi Germany. For every claim he makes, he includes a plethora of photos, quotes, and copies of declassified documents from various nations. There is no point in disputing his claims, as everything is so well researched and presented. I recommend buying this book for anyone that is interested in Nazi weaponry whether that is the V-rockets, tanks, submarines, or death rays. You do not have to read this book chronologically because Witkowski will walk you through each chapter separately. In the end, I highly recommend this book. Some of the critical words are justified, while others are not. There is no claim in the book, for example, that the Bell was something flying. And: yes, the association of the mine with the Bell is based on testimonies, which are not presently available. I cannot prove that, but: there are presently documents available (reproduced on page 302 and described) which do prove that the Germans carried out a project linking gravity with plasma and propulsion, which is a breakthrough... Generally the Bell story is in my opinion MUCH better documented than previously. As to the general notion that the Germans were far ahead of the allies in many fields, it's also strange that "Kid" is questioning that, for there are numerous allied documents saying for example that the difference was the order of 5 - 15 years, depending on the field. He referred to the example of tanks. Well, it couldn't be worse example. The E-50 tank, with stabilised 88 mm gun, night sights, turbine propulsion (1150 HP) and some other inventions, actually represented more the level of the 1960s and it wasn't a "paper tank", for the gun was in production, the engine was tested and its hull is actually in the US. The difference was generally huge - please note that it was only after the war that the allied designers appreciated such a simple thing as the oblique (?) wing, while the Germans were already developing during the war the second generation of jet planes. Their approach to the development of technology was different in many respects, and that's what I wanted to emphasize, because in my view it's still poorly understood. Only when one will compile various fields, an overall picture will emerge, which is simply interesting. It emerges that it was a different model of civilization, working differently. We may learn from that, or we should...

The first edition of this book has been priced between $300- $700 dollars used. The detail is in depth but not enough to bore the reader. All the major points are approached in a well organized manner. Reading through the book one will understand why we were ten years behind Germany in various concepts ranging from water resistant materials to infrared laser systems. This is why the USA has these technologies & the importance to defeat Germany first was essential. Hopefully Mr. Witkowski will work on revising his other books for his English readership.

The "Wunderwaffe" book & his others are well worth having. I look forward to his future volumes.

The empirical analysis is focused on economic governance, administrative reform and intergovernmental relationships. Drawing on survey data, documents and interviews, the analysis finds that domestic institutions still intrinsically shape domestic governance. International norms towards deregulation and market-based administrative reform confront domestic institutions with prescriptions for reform but the three countries provide only very few examples of unmitigated domestic implementation. What Jon Pierre calls 'the microfoundations of globalization'-the assessment, adoption or rejection of international norms and ideas in vogue-is a complex process where domestic institutions and path dependencies remain at the helm. The most important exception to this pattern is governance during financial crises where countries are dependent on conditioned support from transnational institutions.

With simple chant and bright oil paintings, a bedtime ecological prayer connects a child in his room with all the animal life on the planet: in the forest and the ocean, in ponds and on plains. Insects receive only grudging inclusion ("even the bugs . . . even the ones with really small brains"), but that may be to force the rhyme. The playful pictures in big circular frames show all kinds of creatures, from elephants and hyenas to dogs and birds ("trumpeters, yappers, crowers and yowlers"), which the boy knows are there as he curls up in bed with his cat in his cozy room. The chant is nondenominational, as much lullaby as blessing, and young children will enjoy identifying the animals, the sounds they make, the places they live, and the connections between us all through the night. Bless This House

Leslie Staub has written a creative nondenominational bedtime prayer book for young children. Its rhyming rhythm celebrates all that is near and dear to a child's heart, everything from its home, family, nature, and all God's creatures are seen from the open window of the child's bedroom. Children can always find something to be grateful about, and the simple text in the book helps all the young readers to make that feeling possible. The illustrations are done from the child's perspective of looking out the bedroom window. The author/illustrator uses bright oil colors to achieve keen sense of outdoors and Mother Earth.

Since purchasing this book a month ago, my 18 month old daughter has requested every night before bed (and in the morning, a few hours later, mid-afternoon-- ALL THE TIME!). Each time we read it, we discover something new in the illustrations. We like to sing the words to the tune of "Tis A Gift to Be Simple" and come up with our own lyrics too.

This book was given to me at a baby shower and little did I know that four years later it would be tattered and worn from all of the love shown to it! We read this book every night before bed and my 2 and 4 year old kids have it memorized. I even had to record them. It is a darling prayer to hear from their lips.

Including, as he does, a chronological discussion of the specifically excavated sites, from Mehargarh to Taxila, Professor Arun Biswas captures a panoramic view of the hoary, richly variegated cultures which, in their final analysis, lead him not only to question the diffusionist theory concerning the Aryan intrusion , but also to highlight, among a range of his first-time-arrived conclusions, the primacy of India in the areas of non-ferrous ore mining, production of carburised iron, wootz, steel, forge-welding of wrought iron, distilled zinc and high-zinc brass. Barring the foreign travellers accounts, the volume draws exclusively on archaeological evidence. Volume 2 approaches the theme from the viewpoint of indigenous literary sources chronologically marshalling over three thousand years of Sanskrit writings: ranging from Rigveda to Rasaratnasamuccaya. Reviewing, among other things, the entire gamut of studies in gemmology (ratnashastra) and alchemy (rasashastra), the authors here set out a meticulous analysis of Rasaratnasamuccaya: a fourteenth century text, high-lighting the climactic heights of iatrochemistry in ancient India. With detailed explanations of Sanskrit technical expressions, the volume also tries to correlate, wherever possible, literary evidence with archaeological data. Sponsored by the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi, Minerals and Metals in Ancient India has involved years of the authors painstaking research.
