About the Author

Robert S. Feldman still remembers those moments of beingoverwhelmed when he started college at Wesleyan University.  “I wondered whether I was up to thechallenges that faced me,” he recalls, “and--although I never would haveadmitted it at the time--I really had no idea what it took to be successful atcollege.”

That experience, along with his encounters with many students during his ownteaching career, led to a life-long interest in helping students navigate thecritical transition that they face at the start of their own collegecareers.  Professor Feldman, who went onto receive a doctorate in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison,teaches at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he is AssociateDean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Professor ofPsychology.  He directs POWER Up forStudent Success, the UMass first-year experience course for incoming students.

Professor Feldman’s proudest professional accomplishment is winning the CollegeOutstanding Teaching Award at UMass.  Healso has been named a Hewlett Teaching Fellow and was Senior Online InstructionFellow.  He has taught courses at MountHolyoke College, Wesleyan University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Professor Feldman is a Fellow of both the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. He is a winner of a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer awardand has written some 100 scientific articles, book chapters, and books.  His books, some of which have been translatedinto Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Chinese, include Improving the First Yearof College: Research and Practice, Understanding Psychology, 8/e, andDevelopment Across the Life Span, 4/e. His research interests encompass the study of honesty and truthfulnessin everyday life, development of nonverbal behavior in children, and the socialpsychology of education.  His researchhas been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health andthe National Institute on Disabilities and Rehabilitation Research. 

With the last of his three children completing college, Professor Feldmanoccupies his spare time with serious cooking and earnest, but admittedly unpolished,piano playing.  He also loves totravel.  He lives with his wife, who isan educational psychologist, in a home overlooking the Holyoke mountain rangein western Massachusetts.

Jason T. Eberl is the Semler Endowed Chair for Medical Ethics and Professor of Philosophy at Marian University in Indianapolis, where he teaches bioethics, ethics, and medieval philosophy. He authored Thomistic Principles and Bioethics (2006), and is the editor of Battlestar Galactica and Philosophy (Wiley-Blackwell, 2008) and co-editor of Sons of Anarchy and Philosophy (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013).

Kevin S. Decker is Professor of Philosophy at Eastern Washington University, where he teaches ethics, American and Continental Philosophy, and philosophy of popular culture. He is the editor or co-editor of five previous books on pop culture including Terminator and Philosophy (Wiley-Blackwell, 2009), Ender’s Game and Philosophy (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013), The Ultimate South Park and Philosophy (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013) and Who is Who? A mixed bag

Like so many collected volumes, this one is a mixed bag. The value of a book about Star Wars and philosophy, I think, is in what philosophy can contribute to our thinking about Star Wars or what Star Wars can contribute to our philosophical thinking. Nothing in here really accomplishes the latter, and I didn't really expect them to. If you mostly want to learn about philosophy, you're better off with a book that focuses just on philosophy.

However, there are a few interesting papers in here that manage to contribute valuable philosophical ideas to the discussion about Star Wars:

-William A. Lindemuth's article suggests that Luke Skywalker is a Kierkegaardian Knight of Faith. The exposition isn't amazing, but the idea is one of the most interesting in the volume.
-Adam Barkman and Kyle Alkema fruitfully compare the Jedi order to what Plato says in The Republic, and Terrance MacMullan compares that to what Nietzsche has to say.
-Cole Bowman gives one of the most insightful (if too brief) feminist perspectives on Star Wars in print.
-Marek McGann illuminates the notions of the Force and Jedi training with ideas from Merleau-Ponty.

What makes these essays good is that they use philosophical theory to offer interpretations of what's going on in the movies. The problem with some of the other essays in the volume is that they seem more like they're using the movies as an excuse to talk about a philosophical topic that has only marginal relevance to the Star Wars. That way of doing things doesn't add anything to our understanding of Star Wars, and it's not the ideal way to discuss philosophy either, since Star Wars is often more a distraction from philosophical issues than a means of illuminating them.

The explanations of philosophical concepts and the positions of historical philosophers are not always accurate and seldom thorough enough for my taste, but I suppose that's all we can expect of a book in popular philosophy. The biggest problem with this volume, however, is that each essay is about 10 pages long, and very little of interest can accomplished in 10 pages when 20% of your text is fan-service references to Star Wars.

If you're really interested in thinking about Star Wars, this book is worth a look, but if you're mostly interested in reading really good philosophy, look elsewhere.

Finally, if you're curious whether to buy this book or Star Wars and Philosophy: More Powerful than You Can Possibly Imagine, I'd tentatively recommend More Powerful than You Can Possibly Imagine. The books are comparable in style and quality overall, but the four best essays in More Powerful than You Can Possibly Imagine are better than the four best essays in this volume, and while this volume is longer and gives you more material, More Powerful than You Can Possibly Imagine has about as much good material.

Now I understand why it is so universally loved and respected

This is an eye opener. Going back to where the origins of the philosophies of the jedi, religion and ancient history, George Lucas really did some research when writing the series. Who knew all of this was so deeply imbedded in the series? Now I understand why it is so universally loved and respected. A great read! Not one to read straight through, but to read a bit and then ponder, discuss.

PBL that Works for students

PBL Starter Kit
Wow. Finally a book that makes Project Based Learning (PBL) understandable and effectively planned in any school setting. PBL is where the project becomes the unit or mini-unit. 21st Century skills, including Communication, Collaboration, and Critical Thinking--among others, are incorporated. Students learn the curriculum standards or learning objectives as they seek real world solutions and/or develop innovative answers to complex driving questions. Many examples can be found at the BIE org site.

The authors use a conversational format that's engaging, and guides the reader's understanding through clear explanations and vignettes. They guide you through the PBL development, and management of a project so that when you're done reading you will have a completed product, using their enclosed templates.

I conduct workshops on PBL through out Michigan, and have switched to this book as the resource for the volume of teachers I coach. I wish I had this book years ago when I did national training on PBL. Get this book, and any teacher and instructional leader will find this reference quickly dog-eared, highlighted, and annotated from much usage.

Get Ready to Implement PBL

If you have always wanted to try Project Based Learning, but have found it difficult to even know where to start, this is the guide for you. The book clearly takes teachers through the process of creating, managing, and reflecting on a project based learning assessment. The authors place an emphasis on designing a project that is authentic in nature and is integrated into the standards for learning rather than just the culminating activity for a unit. Examples and design templates make certain the user is creating a successful PBL unit.

This is a must have for teachers who want to ensure they are preparing their students for the 21st Century world in which we live.

Finally! A break from theory with some practical guidance.

I have been researching Project-Based Learning to implement in my classroom since I started teaching four years ago. This is by far the most useful book I have found. Buck Institute of Education has the handouts available on the website, so the kindle version would work just fine. I ended up ordering both. It gives you a clear cut path to implementing a project in your classroom. It is actually designed for you to plan one as you read it. It was a nice relief of book after book of theory without any real guidance on practical application. If you are thinking of starting your first project or even if you have some experience with projects, I highly recommend you check out this book as it will drastically increase the quality of work and smoothness of your project (if projects can and should really go smoothly). FYI, I teach High School Science and used this book to plan four projects this year. They were the most successful learning experiences I have probably set up, and like I said, I have been working at implementing PBL for four years. BIE has some great resources. Check out their website before you purchase to see where they are coming from. I don't think you will regret Project Based Learning or using this book to get you there, unless you are not into student-centered learning.

A hurried one eats raw

As we say in my country, "a hurried one eats raw". Many many mistakes are made in this book. It is a good project of a book, and the star is for this, but I've got a strong doubt that it is good for a student, specially if used as a guide. So many mistakes that I laughed at some of them. Princeton University, well recognised all around the world, should think twice before putting its name on a book.

This would be a very useful book if it were not for the surprisingly large number of errors. A little more care is required to produce an updated and corrected edition. A new edition to eliminate typos, errors in derivations, and to provide a lttle more explanation where necessary, would render the book very useful to students and professionals alike.

Did you already learn something but couldn't remember the exact details of it or you just want to know the basics (very basics) then this book is for you. The princeton guide gives a quick summary of some very useful stuff. Don't try and actually learn (study) from this book because it doesn't give any problems. (Sadly, doing problems is the best way to learn it)! For someone like me who has seen almost everything in physics, this book is perfect for reacquainting me with some long time facts and calculations that I have forgotten. The key word FORGOTTEN, not actually trying to learn from because I have already done so. Summarize: Undergrads in the early stage don't buy this book! For upperUndergrads who are thinking about going on to grad school or actual other grad students, do buy this book!

Good, but not excellent

I had expected more court-yard gardens (being in Spain) and more historical gardens. What we are presented are more modern gardens (mostly) at villas and mansions in the country. And they didn't always live upp to my expectations. If you compare to France, gardens in Spain doesn't seem to have that high standard in design. I thought there would have been enough for a book this size to rival the French but no. Although some photos are stunning, this will not be a favourit in my humble collection.

Exceptional lush photographs explore the beauty and style of Spanish gardens. Each garden profile is accompanied by a passionate personal reflection of the owner. One owner says, " The garden is a dream and with skill and patience you can bring it to fruition no matter where you are." Many of the gardeners discuss the natural challenges they faced creating their personal spaces. Others discuss the history of their properties and gardens. Several Grande dames discuss loss of spouses and their eventual personal healing through involvement in their gardens.

You may not have a volcano as a backdrop or a 1000-year-old olive tree but Hidden Gardens of Spain is full of wonderful executable ideas that would compliment a wide variety of American homes. Spanish gardens have similar features, which are practical and easily interpreted. A short list of essentials includes: patio, pool or other water feature, an emphasis on cool green foliage, strong vertical elements, and formal geometric plantings. Secret spaces, gardens within gardens that manipulate the view so only part of the garden are revealed at one time. Spanish gardens generally have a minimum of flowering plants; there are always a few varieties, for example a huge bed of agapanthus as a center point of color. Box hedges, stately cedars, and cypress are also very common.

Pictured on the cover is Palacio de las Due�as, located in Seville and owned by the Duchess of Alba. Building began in the fourteenth century and the garden is still a work in progress. Seville is incredibly hot in summer and the tinkling of the water and the refreshing coolness of the green space can be appreciated even in the photo. This portion of the garden illustrates several of the common elements, strong verticals, in this case the palm trees, low geometric box hedges outlining greenery, and a central fountain. This garden has more flowers than most. The enclosed courtyard extends the living space and blurs the boundaries between inside and outside. The courtyard also makes a secret or hidden space, revealing only this section and the remainder of the garden remains hidden from view.

A modern garden, La Mirada, the author's own, uses classic Spanish elements but his choices of materials are unique. For example, he used a mixture of live and dead trees from the surrounding area to create strong verticals. In a reflective moment he admits to ripping up all the trees in order to control the landscape. A mistake for sure, because he didn't realize how hard it was to grow a tree in pure chalk soil! Geometrical elements throughout the garden are made from tinted cement and salvaged automobile glass represents "a pool". A large reflecting pool near the house serves as a true water feature and it is accented with a few water lilies. Green ivy covers the fa�ade of the modern organic shaped house, providing a green cooling respite.

Gardeners, landscape designers and those who are crazy about all things Spanish will appreciate this intimate look at rarely photographed gardens. Many of the gardens are open to the public so those planning a trip to Spain can put some of these beautiful locations on their itinerary.

A Spanish Garden Idyll

A delightful coffee-table book which attacks the senses, giving a glimpse into the gardens of large Spanish estates which we mere mortals will never see.

The photography is fabulous and picks out the essence (and often quirkiness) of gardens in each region. The accompanying text provides good insight into the motivations and character of the gardens' owners.

It is not a book for instruction on garden design or practice - rather it is a good read for a gardener on a winters day. A high quality publication, worth its price.
