About the Author

Yusuke Sugomori

Yusuke Sugomori is a creative technologist with a background in information engineering. When he was a graduate school student, he cofounded Gunosy with his colleagues, which uses machine learning and web-based data mining to determine individual users' respective interests and provides an optimized selection of daily news items based on those interests. This algorithm-based app has gained a lot of attention since its release and now has more than 10 million users. The company has been listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange since April 28, 2015. In 2013, Sugomori joined Dentsu, the largest advertising company in Japan based on nonconsolidated gross profit in 2014, where he carried out a wide variety of digital advertising, smartphone app development, and big data analysis. He was also featured as one of eight "new generation" creators by the Japanese magazine Web Designing. In April 2016, he joined a medical start-up as cofounder and CTO.

Quite Good -- Not Just for Java

I'm quite pleased with this book, actually. I was a little reluctant initially, fearing that this would be nothing but a simple surface-level overview of how to put together a bunch of pre-existing libraries (ick). Instead, it actually goes into the mathematical derivations and underlying principles of the algorithms (!) and instructs the user on how to build systems from the ground up. I'll likely be using this a lot in the near and distant future as a reference when I have to implement these systems in other languages. The reason I'm not giving it four stars is that I felt it was a little on the thin-side at times. It could easily go into more depth on building computational graphs and doing backprop against them instead of the simple layer/weight setup. I'll go through it again in the near future and may update my review.

It looks like a "draft", not a complete book. Only the first chapters (introductions) are worth reading) and anyway they are short without any useful information. The implementatiton chapters do not explain anything about deep learning but explain the api of a proprietary java libray.

Could definitely benefit from an experienced editor

The text is pretty difficult to follow, not because of the technical nature of the material, but because the author uses some pretty esoteric meanings for words. The text reads like someone simply transcribed audio lectures. I'll probably be returning this book.

This book provides a glimpse into the life and work of Robert Langer, an amazing scientist, inventor and entrepreneur. Growing up in Albany, New York, Langer developed a passion for mathematics. While he was pretty good at science, he was very good at math. He went on to receive his BA in chemical engineering from Cornell University and his Doctorate of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As a graduate student at MIT, he was involved in teaching underprivileged high school dropouts, his goal: to make math and science interesting.

Langer's research laboratory at MIT is the largest biomedical engineering lab in the world. He has authored more than 1300 papers and holds more than 1080 patents. His patents have been licensed or sublicensed to more than 250 companies. A selection of 53 key papers and 50 patents are included in this book.

Langer has pioneered many new technologies, including controlled release system and is regarded as the founder of tissue engineering in the field of regenerative medicine. However, his success did not come easily. He struggled in the late 1970s and early 1980s because scientists, especially established scientists, did not believe in his research. To obtain his first patent, Langer scoured existing literature and found a paper published by five famous chemists and chemical engineers that said his results were surprising and went against conventional thinking. He managed to get the patent after the five researchers confirmed that they really wrote the paper.

The introductory chapter of the book gives an account of Langer's struggles as well as triumphs as he pursued research in biotechnology and tissue engineering in an effort to "make the world a better place and transform human healthcare." The book will appeal to both students and scientists.

About the Author
Robert S Langer is the David H Koch Institute Professor (there are 13 Institute Professors at MIT; being an Institute Professor is the highest honor that can be awarded to a faculty member). He works at the interface between biotechnology and material sciences. He pioneered the development and synthesis of polymers for controlled delivery of drugs. These delivery systems include microspheres, nanospheres, and implants, for treating cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, narcotic addiction and alcoholism. Hundreds of millions of individuals every year use controlled drug delivery systems. Dr Langer has written nearly 1,380 articles. He also has 1,260 issued and pending patents. Dr Langer's patents have been licensed or sublicensed to over 350 pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology and medical device companies. He is the most cited engineer in history (h-index 239).

Dr Langer has received over 220 major awards. He is one of 4 living individuals to have received both the United States National Medal of Science (2006) and the United States National Medal of Technology and Innovation (2011). He also received the 2002 Charles Stark Draper Prize, considered the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for engineers, the 2008 Millennium Prize, the world's largest technology prize, the 2012 Priestley Medal, the highest award of the American Chemical Society, the 2013 Wolf Prize in Chemistry, the 2014 Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and the 2014 Kyoto Prize. He is also the only engineer to receive the Gairdner Foundation International Award; 84 recipients of this award have subsequently received a Nobel Prize. In 2015, Dr Langer received the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering. Among numerous other awards Langer has received are the Dickson Prize for Science (2002), Heinz Award for Technology, Economy and Employment (2003), the Harvey Prize (2003), the John Fritz Award (2003) (given previously to inventors such as Thomas Edison and Orville Wright), the General Motors Kettering Prize for Cancer Research (2004), the Dan David Prize in Materials Science (2005), the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research (2005), the largest prize in the US for medical research, induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (2006), the Max Planck Research Award (2008), the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research (2008), the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize (2011), the Terumo International Prize (2012) and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Life Science (2016). In 1998, he received the Lemelson-MIT prize, the world's largest prize for invention for being "one of history's most prolific inventors in medicine." In 1989 Dr Langer was elected to the National Academy of Medicine, and in 1992 he was elected to both the National Academy of Engineering and to the National Academy of Sciences, and in 2012 he was elected to the National Academy of Inventors. Dr Langer has received 29 honorary degrees.

This is a wonderful book about one of the most cited scientists and engineers in history, Robert Langer. His scientific discoveries and inventions made an enormous economic impact not only to MIT, Cambridge, Massachusetts, US but also to the rest of the world. Langer wrote a short and lucid autobiography to recount his ordinary childhood, and later extraordinary scientific achievements, mostly through his insatiable curiosity, creativity, taking unconventional path, persistence, strong passion for science, care about education and respect students and other people. Langer not only unleash his own imagination, but he also inspired countless students, postdocs, visitors and collaborators around the world. This book selects his most important scientific papers and lists his inventions. In the appendix, there are several pages of photos taken from his office walls, full of awards from around the world, not only from US, Europe, Japan but also Israel and Iran. He is a true humanist, standing above all politics in order to make amazing scientific and technological contributions that greatly benefit mankind!

About Our Authors  
Laurie Ann Callihan received her Bachelor of Science in Biology from San Diego Christian College in El Cajon, California. She is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Science Education as a University Fellow at Florida State University. She has extensive writing, speaking, and teaching experience. Her authorship includes The Best Test Preparation for the CLEP Biology Exam and other REA titles and journal articles currently in press. She is an internationally known speaker on education, having been the keynote speaker at state and local education conventions throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. In addition to years of study, curriculum development, and teaching Biology and Physical Science, her current research focuses on development of effective teaching methods and tools for conceptual understanding.   
David Callihan earned a Bachelor of Science in Geophysics from San Diego Christian College in El Cajon, California. He currently teaches physical science and mathematics at Bishop Hall Charter School in Thomasville (Thomas County), Georgia.  He began his teaching career at DeSoto Middle School in Arcadia, Florida, where he was recognized as the top performing teacher based on AYP results. Prior to becoming a teacher, Mr. Callihan had a successful career in manufacturing, oil exploration, and high technology sales. Mr. Callihan is a Zero-G teacher coach, and has worked with the Florida Space Grant Consortium, the Center for Oceanic Studies in Educational Excellence, and the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. He is currently working on his Master’s in Science Education at Florida State University.

About This Book and testware® 
This book provides you with complete preparation for the CLEP Natural Sciences exam. Inside you will find a targeted review of the subject matter, as well as tips and strategies for test taking. We also give you three practice tests, featuring content and formatting based on the official CLEP Natural Sciences exam. About the Exam
Who takes CLEP exams and what are they used for?
CLEP examinations are typically taken by people who have acquired knowledge outside the classroom and wish to bypass certain college courses and earn college credit. The CLEP is designed to reward students for learning—no matter where or how that knowledge was acquired. The CLEP is the most widely accepted credit-by-examination program in the country, with more than 2,900 colleges and universities granting credit for satisfactory scores on CLEP exams. 
Although most CLEP examinees are adults returning to college, many graduating high school seniors, enrolled college students, military personnel, and international students also take the exams to earn college credit or to demonstrate their ability to perform at the college level. There are no prerequisites, such as age or educational status, for taking CLEP examinations. However, because policies on granting credits vary among colleges, you should contact the particular institution from which you wish to receive CLEP credit.
There are two categories of CLEP examinations: 
1. CLEP General Examinations, which are five separate tests that cover material usually taken as requirements during the first two years of college. CLEP General Examinations are available for English Composition (with or without essay), Humanities, College Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and History.
2. CLEP Subject Examinations include material usually covered in an undergraduate course with a similar title. For a complete list of the subject examinations offered, visit the College Board website.
Who administers the exam?
The CLEP exams are developed by the College Board, administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), and involve the assistance of educators throughout the United States. The test development process is designed and implemented to ensure that the content and difficulty level of the test are appropriate.
When and where is the exam given?
CLEP exams are administered each month throughout the year at more than 1,300 test centers in the United States and can be arranged for candidates abroad on request. To find the test center nearest you and to register for the exam, you should obtain a copy of the free booklets CLEP Colleges and CLEP Information for Candidates and Registration Form. CLEP Options for Military Personnel and Veterans
CLEP exams are available free of charge to eligible military personnel and eligible civilian employees. All the CLEP exams are available at test centers on college campuses and military bases. In addition, the College Board has developed a paper-based version of 14 high-volume/high-pass-rate CLEP tests for DANTES Test Centers. How to Use This Book and Testware®
What do I study first?
To begin your studies, read over the introduction and the suggestions for test taking. Take Practice Exam 1 on CD-ROM to determine your strengths and weaknesses, and then study the course review material, focusing on your specific problem areas. The course review includes the information you need to know when taking the exam. Make sure to follow up your diagnostic work by taking the remaining practice exam on CD-ROM to become familiar with the format and feel of the CLEP Natural Sciences exam. 
When should I start studying? 
It is never too early to start studying for the CLEP Natural Sciences exam. The earlier you begin, the more time you will have to sharpen your skills. Do not procrastinate! Cramming is not an effective way to study, since it does not allow you the time needed to learn the test material. The sooner you learn the format of the exam, the more time you will have to familiarize yourself with it. 
Format and Content of the Exam
The CLEP Natural Sciences exam covers the material one would find in a freshman or sophomore general science survey course covering biology and physical science. It is meant for students who are non-science majors. The exam stresses basic facts and principles, as well as general theoretical approaches used by scientists. 
There are 120 multiple-choice questions on the exam, each with five possible answer choices, to be answered in 90 minutes. 
The approximate breakdown of topics is as follows:
50% Biological Science
10% Origin, evolution, and classification of life (Chapter 2)
10% Cell organization and division, gene regulation, bioenergetics,biosynthesis (Chapter 3)
20% Structure, function, and development of organisms; heredity (Chapter 4)
10% Concepts of population biology, ecology (Chapter 5)
50% Physical Science
7% Atomic and nuclear structure, properties, and reactions, elementary particles (Chapter 6)
10% Chemical elements, compounds, reactions, molecular structure and bonding (Chapter 7)
12% Heat, thermodynamics, states of matter; classical mechanics; relativity (Chapter 8)
4% Electricity and magnetism, waves, light, and sound (Chapter 9)
7% The universe: galaxies, stars, the solar system (Chapter 10)
10% Earth: atmosphere, hydrosphere, structure features, geologic processes and history (Chapter 11)

WARNING! NOT ALL TEST SIGHTS WILL BASE OFF OF THIS SOURCE MATERIAL!

Good quality book and CD for loading test prep materials. I studied really, really hard. I took the test and about 75 percent of the test given was not on material covered in this book. I am pretty sure there are warnings within the book regarding that possibility. I did not pass my test. I felt so smart after I studied the materials in this book and took the practice test, and studied some more. Then when I took the test the computer selected for me, there was so much material in the questions that were not covered in my book - I felt dumb. This is a huge subject, Natural Science - and it would be a challenge for any company to guarantee positive results to any student who tried to CLEP in these categories. Take the class, I did and came away with an 'A'.

I passed the test but...

This book has alot of information regarding Natural Sciences, however; this is a very broad, deep topic so this book can't possibly cover everything you may encounter on the CLEP test. I did study this book in preparation for the Natural Sciences CLEP and I would estimate that this book helped me to answer about 50% of the questions on the CLEP. Not that bad! The other half was not reviewed in this book and I read this book cover to cover so I should know! I did pass with a score of 55 (50 needed to pass) so I was pleased with this book for the most part. However, for future CLEP Natural Sciences test takers be sure to reference other materials as well. You will need all the study time you can get to pass this test. The hardest test I have ever taken but it is passable...if you study!

I definitely recommend this book for this exam. I was really worried because there was so much information to absorb. I studied for about a month and passed with a 71.

For those not familiar with the ACE requirements, generally colleges only require a score of 50 for full credit. The CLEP scale is from 20-80. [...]

Double check with the college that you're planning on applying CLEP credit for! Different institutions have different policies regarding CLEP/DANTES credits. You don't want to waste time/money on a test they might not accept. You also want to go ahead and have the school code ready. Requesting the scores to be sent to the institution later costs $30 per request.

That being said, I'm shopping right now for more books in this series to knock-out more of my General Education and General Elective Requirements. :)
