Sensitive, Informative, and helpful

We've been preparing for our wedding and marriage (well, mostly the marriage, but wedding prep has to happen some time) and we've read a few books on sex. This was the best book so far. It's very informative and frank without being offensive. Some readers may find the Penners a tad too liberal (if they can't find a Scriptural command for or against something, they generally leave it up to the reader), but I found them dead-on. The book starts with the necessary relational foundation for sex and leads into the technical how-tos.

The beginning of the book starts out like a pre-marital counseling session. My fiance and I have done our share, so we tried to do some of the exercises, but found them a bit repetitive (we did similar things in counseling) and fluffy (I wanted a book that just spelled everything out). Don't read through this book and put it down after the first few chapters, however. Especially if you don't like fluff. They are necessary building blocks to a fantastic sexual relationship and the Penners emphasize again and again that a good relationship that is open and honest and free is necessary for a healthy sex life. The rest of the book is pretty straight forward.

The next few chapters explain the body parts involved in sex, and then explains the technical how-tos. Their explanations were very good and the emphasis was continually on not just having good technique -- but having a good relationship.

Then they explain everything about the honeymoon -- how to plan a successful honeymoon and what [not] to expect on the first night. They really emphasize that couples should have few expectations so they won't be let down. They also explain how to maintain the sex life after the honeymoon.

This book mirrors The Gift of Sex - both are great resources.

I read this book in conjunction with Intended for Pleasure and I really enjoyed both books. I found this book was a little clearer and easier to understand, so if you have a choice of only one book to buy, I recommend this. However, if you can buy and read both, try to read Intended for Pleasure first (it's more technical and a bit drier) and then read this one. Or read them together. Both are great resources.

I'm stil waiting to put knowledge into practice, but until then...

A Real Treat

I just bought this book recently, and I think it's just great. I'm engaged, and although I'm not completely inexperienced, I was wondering what to do on my wedding night. This book is the best that I've read so far. They lay it all out, as naked as you'll be on your honeymoon! The authors don't skirt around their complete discussion of different sexual topics.
Although this is definitely a Christian book, you never get the feeling that the authors are moralizing or condemning you for things you have done in your past, or choose to do in your marriage. The drawings are very dry and clinical, and the text needs some editing. However, this still doesn't detract from the overall quality of the book. Especially if you're a virgin and are a little apprehensive of the first time, I would highly recommend this book.

About the Author

Prof. Keith Martin is Director of the Information Security Group at Royal Holloway, University of London. An active member of the cryptographic research community, hem also has considerable experience in teaching cryptography to non-mathematical students, including industrial courses and young audiences. Since 2004 he has led the introductory cryptography module on Royal Holloway's pioneering MSc Information Security.

Excellent reference and overview of encryption and cryptography

When Bruce Schneier first published Applied Cryptography in 1994, it was a watershed event, given that is was one of the first comprehensive texts on the topic that existed outside of the military.

In the nearly 20 years since the book came out, a lot has changed in the world of encryption and cryptography. A number of books have been written to fill that gap and Everyday Cryptography: Fundamental Principles and Applications is one of them that have recently been published.

While the title Everyday Cryptography may give the impression that this is an introductory text; that is not the case. Author Keith Martin is the director of the information security group at Royal Holloway, a division of the University of London, and the book is meant for information security professionals in addition to being used as a main reference for a principles of cryptography course. The book is also a great reference for those studying for the CISSP exam.

While the book notes that almost no prior knowledge of mathematics is required since the book deliberately avoids the details of the mathematical techniques underpinning cryptographic mechanisms. That might be a bit of a misnomer as the book does get into the mathematics of cryptography. While the mathematics in the book is not overwhelming, they are certainly not underwhelming. For those that want a deeper look, the book includes an appendix for many of the mathematical concepts detailed in the book.

Two benefits of the book are that it stresses practical aspects of cryptography and real-world scenarios. The mathematics detailed avoids number theory with a focus on practicability. It also shows how cryptography is used as the underlying technology behind information security, rather than simply focusing on the abstracts of the potential of cryptography.

With that, the books 13 (made up of 4 parts) chapters provide a comprehensive overview of the theory and practice around all as aspects of contemporary cryptography. Each of the chapters end with a summary, detailed lists of items for further reading, and sets of penetration questions that challenge the reader. Readers are advised to spend time on these questions as it is often easy for the reader to feel that they understand the material. The questions can quickly humble the reader and show them that it may not be the case.

Part 1 is titled Setting the Scene and provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamental of cryptography. Chapter 1 (freely available here) details the basic principles about cryptography and provides a high-level introduction.

Chapter 2 provides a good overview of the history of cryptography. It details a number of obsolete, yet historically relevant ciphers, such as the Vigen�re cipher from the 1500's, to the Playfair cipher from the mid-1800's and others. Martin provides a good overview of the cryptanalysis of the Vigen�re cipher and lessons learned from it.

Chapters 4-9 comprise part 2, and provide a thorough overview of the various forms of encryption (symmetric and asymmetric) and digital signatures. This section gets into some of the deeper mathematics of cryptography. While the author states that almost no prior knowledge of mathematics is needed; those without a background will surely be confused by some of the material.

Chapter 7 closes with a good overview of the relationship between digital signatures and handwritten signatures. The author notes the importance of resisting any temptation to consider digital signatures as a direct electronic equivalent of handwritten signatures. He then provides a detailed outline of the environmental, security, practical and flexibility differences between them.

Key management is one of the most important aspects of cryptography and often the most difficult to execute on. Part of the difficulty around key management is at the user level, with key updates, passphrase management and more. Ultimately, effective key management is essential to the underlying security of the cryptosystem. The 2 chapters in part 3 provide a thorough synopsis of the fundamentals of key management.

Part 4 closes the book with two chapters on practical cryptographic applications. Chapter 12 details how cryptography can be used on the internet, secure payment cards, video broadcasting and more.

The book concludes with an appendix on the mathematics of cryptography, which takes a look at the basic mathematical concepts the underlie some of the material in the book.

This book is not for the fainthearted and is not an introductory text on the topic. It is meant for the advanced reader or someone taking a college level course. For such a reader serious about a significant overview of the essentials on the topic, Everyday Cryptography: Fundamental Principles and Applications is an excellent reference.

Readable Cryptography

Cryptography is like music. No matter how many times you listen to a piece of music, you always hear something different. Also, although there are rules of composition, you need creativity to make it work. Professor Martin's book offers a number of readable insights into cryptography, a subject that many security professionals have studied before. This is a book that emphasizes practical considerations over math and does a good job of this. Expecially interesting are discussions on "academic" security attacks; a clear exposition of DES; concepts of deterministic and non-deterministic random number generators; SSL cryptography; and mobile phone crypto. The book is a text book for MS level students. So it does read like a text book, and may be a little difficult for everyday or cover to cover reading. Overall, for most security professionals, this book is worth having and absorbing.

Carol Duncan teaches art history at Ramapo College of New Jersey. She is well known as one of the pioneers of a new social-political approach to art history and criticism and has been one of the strongest feminist voices in the ``new art history''. Informative and Easy to Read

Dr. Duncan's books discusses the history of art museums and focusses in on some notable, present day museums. Her approach combines the traditional art historian view with a sociological view. Art is not created in a vacuum and reflects the society it lives within. Duncan's approach gives us insight into why some artwork is accepted while other artwork is not.
This book was required reading in my undergraduate studies. It is one of the few I choose to have in my personal library as well.
Carol Duncan's book is small in size and easy to read. However, just because of its ease and size, don't mistake its value to art history. It is well researched and well edited. It is short, sweet and to the point. Too bad other art history books cannot be like that.

Informative, Easy To Read

Dr. Duncan's book was required reading in my undergraduate studies. She writes from two angles - first, being the traditional fine arts view, and second, a sociological view. Art is not created in a vacuum and is directly affected by the society it lives in. There is a value to looking at art from this combined point of view. You have a clear picture why some art is considered valuable, while some is not.
Carol Duncan's book delves into the reasons why we have art museums and then focusses in on some notable museums of today. The small book is an easy and quick read. However, its relative ease and small size does not mean it does not inform. It is well researched and well edited. It is short, sweet and to the point. Too bad more art history books are not like that.

A Common Sense Guide to Common Sense

This book is a guide to decision making for solving business and personal problems. Basically, it is what you always knew but were to lazy to implement.

One of the best parts is the numerous quotes sprinkled throughout the chapters. One that caught my attention was by Lou Holtz, "When all is said and done, more is said than done!" Pretty good coming from a football coach.

Usually this type of book is based solely on analytical thought. It was a nice touch for the author to go for a holistic approach - both right and left brains functions. It allows for intuition and subconscious involvement, so you are not denying yourself full power in the process.

This book helps good decision-making

Have you witnessed the "dumbing down" of America? Have you seen cashiers unable to count change? Have you seen people blindly make poor choices when better ones are seemingly obvious? Jay Leno's "Jaywalking" segment on television, while entertaining, is symptomatic of a deeper problem. As evidenced by the show, we don't learn and we don't know. If you have witnessed these things don't despair - there is hope.

The root-cause of this problem may be poor decision making or in the author's words poor "critical thinking." The good news is the author takes the reader through many examples of how to make good decisions by thinking through them in a step-by-step manner. Many simple and practical examples are provided to explain these decision-making concepts clearly. These skills, once obtained, can serve as a foundation for higher level thinking later. This book is timely and is needed.

Great introduction to critical thinking

I have read several of Mr. Clayton's books, and I think this is the best. This book is an introductory book to critical thinking and can be read by just about any age group. It can be used to introduce someone to the practices of critical thinking, or, as for myself, a wonderful refresher course that could be read over a weekend. Mr. Clayton has also provided an excellent summary and worksheets in the appendix that make the book an easy reference when I want to apply critical thinking to a new idea. I also signed up on his website to get regular updates through a newsletter. I believe after reading this book, people should look into DeBono's 6 hats thinking methods and collective intelligence methods as a comparison to group think. Overall, a very good book and great resrouce.
