I was at a workshop in for Guiding Readers and Writers: Grades 2-6, and I found this book. It is amazing! It is very practical. It is very easy to read. It is easy to take ideas from this book and apply them in the classroom the next day. If you are searching for a book on what to do during reading workshop, I suggest you get this book and add it to your collection. You won't be sorry!

The Reading Workshop

Great book to explain how to set up a reading workshop in your classroom. Serafini uses examples from his classroom to help visualize what a reading workshop looks like. The language and concepts are easy to understand. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to enhance reading in their classroom.

Having joined the National Guard for the tuition benefits, Crawford, like many of his contemporaries, never expected to do any heavy lifting. Early on, he admits his is "the story of a group of college students... who wanted nothing to do with someone else's war." But when his Florida National Guard unit was activated, he was shipped to Kuwait shortly before the invasion of Iraq. Armed with shoddy equipment, led by incompetent officers and finding release in the occasional indulgence in pharmaceuticals, Crawford cared little for the mission and less for the Iraqis. "Mostly we were guarding gas stations and running patrols," he explains. As for Iraqi civilians, "I didn't give a shit what happened to any of them," he confesses after inadvertently saving an Iraqi boy from a mob beating. Crawford's disdain grows with each extension of his tour, and he leaves Iraq broke, rudderless and embittered. Unfortunately, Crawford dresses up his story in strained metaphors and tired clich�s such as "truth engulfed me like a storm cloud" and "you can never go back home." Despite its pretensions, Crawford's story is not the classic foot soldier's memoir and should provide enough gristle to please military memoir fans.

We crossed the berm the same day as the Army's Third Infantry Division, leading the invasion of Iraq. When the Third Division was sent home, our National Guard unit was passed around the armed forces like a virus: the 108th Airborne, First Marine Expeditionary, 101st Airborne, and finally the First Armored Division. They were all sent home, heroes of the war. Meanwhile, my unit stayed on, my soul rotting, our unit outlasted by no one in our tenure there.

Crawford and his unit spent months upon months patrolling the streets of Baghdad, occupying a hostile city. During the breaks between patrols, Crawford began writing nonfiction stories about what he and his fellow soldiers witnessed and experienced.

The world hears war stories told by reporters and retired generals who keep extensive notebooks and journals. They carry pens as they walk, whereas I carry a machine gun. War stories are told to those who have not experienced the worst in man. And to the listener's ears they can sound like glory and heroism. People mutter phrases like, "I don't know how you did it." And they look at you wondering how you have changed, wondering if you have forever lost the moral dilemma associated with taking another person's life.

In a voice at once raw and immediate, Crawford's stories vividly chronicle the daily life of a young soldier in Iraq-the excitement, the horror, the anger, the tedium, the fear, the camaraderie. But all together, the stories gradually uncover something more: the transformation of a group of young men, innocents, into something entirely different.

I have too many stories to tell, and if just a few of them get read, the ones that real people will understand, then maybe someone will know what we did here. It won't assuage the suffering inside me, inside all of us. It won't bring back anyone's son or brother or wife. It will simply make people aware, if only for one glimmering moment, of what war is really like.

The true life of a soldier

Its far too easy for a civilian to stick a magnetic yellow ribbon on the end of their SUV, say nice things supporting whatever war we happen to be fighting, and believe they are supporting the troops. Many will not like what I am about to write but most Americans are so ignorant about what these men and women have to put up with that it is criminal. Movies portray glamorous fight scenes and non-serving pundits talk about "doing one's duty" without ever serving one day themselves ignoring the the hardships carried by soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen and their families.

John Crawford's book offers a view into the weary world and mind of a combat soldier. It isn't glamorous and offers nothing in the way to justify the war in Iraq. It is about one man trying to survive and keep some small part of his sanity dealing with things that are completely alien to the fat and lazy civilians for whom our wars are at best episodes in some low rated reality show.

From the back cover: Humankind has won many great victories in the fight against climate change. However, these victories are rarely acknowledged or reported. Is this because they were won with nuclear power? Preventing dangerous climate change requires world energy production to be almost completely free from fossil fuels by 2050. At the same time, energy consumption keeps growing, as the population increases and those mired in poverty try to create better lives for themselves. With almost 87 percent of our energy produced with fossil fuels, the challenge is unprecedented in both its scale and urgency. International organizations agree that meeting this challenge will require the use of all the tools at our disposal: Renewable energy, more energy conservation and better efficiency, carbon capture and storage – and nuclear power. At the same time, the global environment and energy discussion is largely dominated by a vocal opinion that climate challenge and global poverty should be conquered with nothing else than renewables, energy conservation and energy efficiency. This book explains how this opinion is largely based on very selective reading of relevant studies and reports, wishful thinking about the powers of technological miracles, and even straight-out falsification of statistics and misrepresentation of facts. Does the anti-nuclear movement really help to give people objective, relevant information they need to make up their minds about zero-carbon energy production, the scale of the challenge, and in particular the up- and downsides of nuclear power? Or are they just spreading fear and uncertainty, while making a huge gamble with the climate, potentially endangering both human civilization and the Earth’s ecosystems?

This is a well-studied but easy-to-read book on the role of nuclear power in climate change mitigation. The reader will be introduced to the facts showing that many NGOs are surprisingly lobbying heavily against nuclear but not so much against fossil fuels while they communicate that the most challenging issue to the global community is the climate change. The reader will get familiarized to the health risks of nuclear power stations and irradiation. In this book those risks are evaluated not in vacuum as sometimes is the case but against the drawbacks of other options. Energy production is a field in which there are no perfect choices since the size of the fossil fuel industry has grown that great. The reader will be introduced in the risks of nuclear proliferation and might have a surprise on that issue. Are there more safe nuclear reactor options available than the current uranium ones? This subject is covered also.

Increasing energy consumption is vital to the development of the developing countries. From where that energy must come? The ultimate message of the book is that the climate challenge is so huge that no-fossil energy technologies cannot be ruled out a priori. We will need all of them to replace fossil fuels. When someone writes a book on a complicated issues there are of course mistakes and errors.The original Finnish edition of this timely book was written so that readers were gathered to point errors in the content and to bring those into the knowledge of the writers via social media. This was a demonstration of both the scientific attitudes of the writers and the power of social media as a way to improve content of written texts. Those few mistakes and errors found in the first Finnish version are corrected in this updated English edition.

Very analytical and easy to approach. Highly recommended

Climate Gamble Climate Gamble takes on the challenge of tackling some of the most controversial issues of the energy policy debate. The outset of the book is quite clear – according to virtually every international study we will have no chance in reaching our climate commitments without the aid of nuclear power. Like it or not, this is a fact according to the studies cited in the book. The authors then go on to painstaking depths in busting various myths for example regarding the dangers of nuclear power.

The book is very easy to read and works as an excellent introductory material to anyone who wants to read balanced views about this source of energy. One doesn’t have to like nuclear power but one can’t either ignore its various benefits over most of the other conventional energy sources.
This book should be compulsory reading for anyone who wants to have an informed view of the debate regarding climate change mitigation and energy.

Yes - The anti-nuclear groups are endangering our future.

This short, 100-page, book packs a punch. The answer to the question in the subtitle is "Yes"; wittingly or unwittingly, environmentalists, mostly as the result of fear built on lack of information, are hindering their own goals with regard to global climate change by opposing nuclear. The coming fourth generation of nuclear will provide clean, safe, abundant and affordable energy to the world, but only if environmentalists get behind it instead of opposing it. Even today, existing nuclear in the US provides some 60+ percent of clean, CO2-free energy. We need more, not less.
