A Rare Gem of a Book

This book has endorsements from big names ranging from the business literature (Ken Blanchard) to the self-help gurus (Susan Jeffers). The back jacket has a quote from former President Bill Clinton ("Sean is an amazing person with an important message"). Tony Robbins wrote the Foreword.

At this point, I could probably end the review because when those movers and shakers recommend a book what more do you need to know? Just get the book. Ah, this is a "but" situation! "I could write a review but" with those endorsements from such successful people...." The "but" situations we encounter every day can have far more profound effects than missing the opportunity to review a book of this caliber.

Sean's style is one of encouraging and prodding, but he's not a rah-rah guy. He's a realist. According to brain researchers (see my other reviews of brain-related books), reality is largely what we make it. The brain filters and repackages information before the conscious mind sees it, largely based on preconceptions and what it "ought to" see. The brain is, essentially, a predictive computer and it will predict based on what it perceives rather than what it senses. That is, it makes its own reality. This fact has only recently been verified in the neuroscience field (physical brain studies) but has long been a fundamental premise on the motivational lecture circuit.

Why is Sean a realist instead of a cheerleader? After all, anyone who is successful on the lecture circuit has it made, right? Classic silver spoon, right? Not right.

Years ago, I learned about a rare disease thanks to the movie "Unbreakable" (came out in 2000, starring Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robin Wright Penn). In this movie, Jackson's character (Elijah) has extremely brittle bones. The movie has several flashback scenes that give us insight into what Elijah's life was like growing up. The movie starts off with his birth; he's born with broken bones.

Sean has that rare disease, and was born with broken bones. His condition makes his life very complicated. He didn't come from a life of ease, but has had to overcome enormous obstacles. He's now a PhD and licensed psychotherapist. He's completing a second PhD (clinical hypnosis). He's an internationally known professional speaker.

And he's three feet tall.

Reading this book, I could not help but feel a strong connection with Sean. He comes across as a person who just wants to help others. He makes his message simple and clear, but at the same time he helps the reader dig into complex challenges.

This book consists of seven chapters, a foreword, an epilogue, and a resources area.

The Foreword by Tony Robbins was very touching and helped me understand what an amazing person the author is. As I have a high opinion of Tony Robbins (whose critics have been forced to eat crow due to discoveries in brain science over the past few years), his endorsement means a lot. He didn't just throw out a few platitudes and empty praises. He made a point of explaining why Sean's book is a "must read." Tony "brings to life" what he's saying, through specific examples.

Chapter One. Born to Kick But: The Short Story of a Big Life. This is an autobiographical sketch. Here, we learn about Sean's childhood, the challenges he faced, and the object lessons he learned. He introduces us to his core philosophy: cause and effect. It's not a new concept and thus it's not something he made up to attract an audience. I've understood this concept for a very long time, but Sean helped me see it with greater clarity.

Chapter Two. Lesson 1: Start Connecting. There's a huge difference between merely communicating and actually connecting with others. I'm not a fan of President Clinton, but the man is an expert on connecting with people. In this chapter, Sean lists "Ten things I learned about connection from President Bill Clinton." Sean knows Clinton personally, so this isn't an armchair observation kind of thing. This chapter has lots of great information for anyone frustrated with relationships (business or personal).

Chapter Three. Lesson 2: Watch What You Say to Yourself. This gets into the traditional inner dialogue stuff, but takes it up a notch or two. One of the things Sean communicates here is your word choices can have a transformational effect (or not, if they are poor choices).

Chapter Four. Lesson 3: Master Your Physical Confidence. You can usually spot a person who has self-esteem issues, can't you? And why is it some people seem to dominate a room, even if they aren't the best-looking, best-dressed, or loudest person in the room? Sean explains why and what you can do about that.

Chapter Five. Lesson 4: Focus Your Focus. As I type this, I have a painful thumb infection. Guess when it hurts the most? When I'm thinking about it! In this chapter, Sean delves into such things as changing your focus from what you don't have to what you can be thankful for. He talks about directing your mind toward what you want to achieve rather than letting your mental powers drown in a pity puddle.

Chapter Six. Lesson 5: Choose Your Friends Wisely. Sean uses the metaphor of a pit crew to illustrate the differences between A Friends, B Friends, and C Friends. He explains that you can choose your pit crew. Avoid the takers, drainers and destroyers. Re-channel that energy into cultivating real friends. Since there's confusion over what a real friend is, Sean makes this clear.

Chapter Seven. Lesson 6: Take Full Responsibility. Either you own your situations, or they own you. When they own you, it's not good. Sean has a simple formula for understanding how to be in control: C > E. That is, cause is greater than effect. He explains how this works and how it can liberate you. As mentioned earlier, Sean is a psychotherapist. If a client will not agree to work with this formula, Sean ends the session and refunds the client's money. That's how important this is.

Epilogue. One Last Thing.... As it's only one page, it's an epilogue rather than a chapter. It's Sean's final piece of wisdom for applying the lessons in the book.

Resources. Sean lists books and movies "that shaped my life." All of these titles are familiar to me. He also lists excellent online resources for various issues.

This book is not one you want to miss. Get your copy today. If you are thinking, "Yeah, but..." then you desperately need it. Don't delay.

"What can a Man who's 3-feet tall Teach you about Confidence?"

Sean Stephenson faced the excruciating pain of almost 200 broken bones by the time he was just 18 years old, because of a condition called Brittle Bone Disease.

At 19 years old he had already achieved some amazing things but he was still unhealthy and aching for so much more in his life.

Then he met Tony Robbins who encouraged him to dream big.
REAL BIG.

Set TEN YEAR goals, said Tony.
So Sean did.

He set a goal to publish a book that changed people's lives and to have his own TV show by the time he was 29...

Sean turned 29 this year.
The same year his book was released AND he recorded his TV show "Three Foot Giant".

Get Off Your "But" - is an incredible book.

I work with people to help them build the confidence to achieve outrageous goals, so I know a thing or two about confidence. But I wrote notes on almost every page of this book. I loved it!

I've never written a book review on Amazon before - but I felt I had to today. The stories of both Sean's own life and that of his friends are truly inspirational. And the exercises really work.

I'll finish with a quote by the TV show host, Jimmy Kimmel:

A Life Changing Book!

Sean Stephenson share his beautiful view of the world and life in Get off your But...and it comes through the world of a man who has overcome obstacles than few could imagine!

My life was blessed by this book and it's very creative ways of altering the way you view your life and circumstances- to STOP making excuses and live the life that you were made to live.

I am almost through reading this great book and I have already recommended it to all of my family and friends!! It's a must read for anyone who is looking for a fresh perspective and a life of "excellence"!

It has fun stories & practical ways that you can rise above and overcome the lies that hold you back. It will entertain you and change you all at the same time!

The Handbook of Geriatric Care Management by Cathy Cress should be known as the bible of Geriatric Care Management. I am a new Care Manager and wanted a resource to help me navigate through this growing field. This book gives me everything from the history of Geriatric Care Management, to how to provide a comprehensive Psychosocial Assessment, to how to navigate through challenging situations in families. Along with the contributions of a host of professionals in the GCM field, it looks like this manual was developed with people like me in mind. I truly feel that this book should be used in every training program or classroom for anyone interested in working with seniors. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Good book on boolean algebra and logic for more advanced students

This book is devoted to two separate and related topics: the theory of Boolean algebra and logic and also the synthesis and simplification of switching and logic circuits. This is a good book for students taking a course on digital logic that has more of a computer science or mathematics perspective rather than an electrical engineering viewpoint. There is no mention of gates or digital circuit building blocks of any kind in this outline. The treatment of switching and logic circuits is limited to the combinational circuits - those circuits whose outputs depend only on the present inputs.

Chapter 1 goes over the basics of boolean logic and the notation used in this outline. Chapter 2 discusses sets and their operations and extends boolean logic to sets of objects. Chapter 3 discusses Boolean algebra, which is a set B together with two binary operations, a singular operation, the two specific elements 0 and 1, and a set of axioms. Thus, in this chapter we are led more into the realm of mathematics than circuits with a good number of proofs as exercises. Chapter 4 abruptly changes course and discusses switching and logic circuits. Here, previous discussions of Boolean logic lead to the practical tasks of minimization and the finding of all prime implicants of a set. The final chapter changes course once again and discusses some advanced topics in Boolean algebra such as lattices, rings, and m-completeness.

Although no specific previous knowledge is really explicitly required to understand this material, I would say that working through the material I found that experience with mathematical proofs, set theory, and oddly enough, abstract algebra were all very advantageous in understanding this outline. It is one of the better written Schaum's outline in that the theory is very well explained. I would recommend it for the more mathematically inclined who are interested in digital logic.

digital designers can find useful problems

For those of you inclined to the theoretical aspects of computing, this book may be good revision. The first half of the book deals with set theory and then with Boolean algebra. The Boolean concepts should be easy to follow, and likewise with the problems presented to you here.

What is more challenging is the second half, dealing with switching circuits. You can see techniques that map from a logic circuit to its Boolean representation. And then the vital idea of a Karnaugh map, in order to simplify that representation. Digital circuit designers live for this stuff! Many problems to chew on. See how well you really understand the material.

You might look with askance on the publication date of 1970. 1970?! Moore had barely formulated his law a few years earlier. And Medium Scale Integration was the order of the day, perhaps, with the first microprocessor still under design. But the maths in this book still holds true now. In fact, it is even more relevant today. Because the circuits are orders of magnitude larger, so finding efficient means of circuit minimisation are more urgent. For that, you need a solid theoretical basis. And this book can test that understanding.

Nice Collection

This collection is in the middle range of difficulty. My son is a Miyazaki fan with 3 1/2 years of piano lessons, and these are just right for him to learn.

The book does happen to be entirely in Japanese, so we're not sure which song is which until we play them.

Awesome!

All the text is in Japanese, but I looked for the titles on the internet and wrote them down on the sheets. It has most of the songs I want to learn. It came in good conditions and sooner than expected :D! Highly recommend it!

Update 11-02-13:

I checked it very quick and found out that this is more like the easy version of the songs, pretty basic; if you are a beginner then this is a good start :). The Merry-go-round of life is just too easy; luckily for me, I bought the Piano Stories book and it includes the Merry-go-round of life advanced version, or so it seems.

The book is suppose to be intermediate but I find it to be more on the easy side. So far the songs I've check sound good and pretty close to the originals, just a simple version of them. If this doesn't bother you then go ahead and buy it :), specially if you are starting and want to learn this Ghibli's classic songs. If you are advanced I do not recommend it.

Beautiful Music

This book is well worth the purchase! The pieces are at a low intermediate level which is great for new pianists ( or violinists who dabble in piano). Do note that the actual page count is only 160 pages. The selection of pieces is great. It also has standard chord symbols and for some songs, the lyrics both in hiragana in the score and in full kanji and furigana on a separate page.

A new look at Italy in the World!

R. J. B. Bosworth. Italy and the Wider World 1860-1960. London and New York: Routledge, 1996, 252 pages.
Richard Bosworth describes himself in the preface to this volume as "the canguro of Italian historiography" (p. x). The image is appropriate not only because he is the most well-known Australian Italianist but also because of the wide range of territory he covers in the eight chapters of this peculiar study. This is not a standard history of Italian foreign policy or of some temporal, geographical, or substantial aspects of it. What Bosworth does here is to synthesise his earlier writing as well as anticipate the results of some of his current research and integrate them with what is essentially a critique of the existing literature on the subject (the volume has 52 pages of notes). The result is a masterful, critical overview of both Italian history of foreign relations and its historiography, a feat that only senior scholars can usually pull off. In the introduction Bosworth makes an interesting distinction between what he calls `legal' and `real' Italy. The first, "driven by a costly and perhaps irrational desire to mimic an imagined past, played the games of European Great Power politics and sought to seize territory in the mare nostrum and its hinterland. The `real' Italies, by contrast, through emigration laid the bases of the commercial and cultural empires of the future, in New York, and Buenos Aires, Kenya and Australia" (p. 3). This distinction is based on Bosworth's adherence to the Bielefeld school's precept that the study of "diplomacy and other forms of international policy should be placed in their social and economic context" (p. 7). In the book, however, Bosworth fails to adhere to this canon fully. He certainly pays attention to "the history of labour markets and financial practices, emigration and ideology, tourism and leisure, philosophy and sociology, and power in its fluctuating and manifold political, social and economic forms" (p. 7) but more than integrating these different historical fragments into a histoire totale, he deals with them in sequence. Thus, the interesting distinction between `real' and `legal' Italy is reflected more in the organization of this volume than in the treatment of the material. Bosworth, in any case, is conscious of this limitation since he admits that "this short book is scarcely the appropriate base from which to launch an historiographical revolution" (p. 13). Every revolution, however, begins with a first shot, and this is a well aimed one. The first five chapters are devoted to `legal' Italy. Bosworth tackles, in turn, Italian diplomacy within European power politics (chapters 1 and 2), the Italian military in war and peace (chapter 3), Italian commercial policies (chapter 4) and the rise and fall of the Italian empire (chapter 5). It is impossible to summarise the content of these five chapters in a book review since Bosworth touches upon basically every topic that has been the subject of debate among historians. All along, he interprets, rebuts, integrates and systematises. Overall, Bosworth claims that there was continuity in the diplomatic efforts of Liberal, Fascist and (First) Republic regimes. Lacking the necessary strength to challenge the status quo, they had to engage in tortuous and interminable diplomatic manoeuvres to attain marginal gains. In tackling the history of Italian commerce, Bosworth agrees with Rosario Romeo's affirmation (although he disagrees with him on almost everything else) "that a United Italy could only make sense if it succeeded economically" and pushes this view to its logical conclusion by stating that "such success remains the fundamental justification for the retention of an Italian nation state" (p. 78). Not surprisingly, after an initial "na�ve reliance on the market" by the end of World War I "the state had become the basic motor of Italian industrial growth" (p. 85). Bosworth's overall evaluation of Italy's imperial ambitions and adventures is a trenchant one: "bathetic." It proved costly and did not resolve Italy's demographic problem, which was the rationalization usually given to justify efforts in this area. The last three chapters of the book deal with "real' Italy. Chapter 6 looks at emigration, while chapter 7 examines culture and ideology. The last chapter is devoted to a neglected area of Italian studies: tourism. Such a neglect seems surprising since "in the century from 1860 to 1960, Italy's biggest and most lucrative industry, the one certainly with the largest number of employees and perhaps with the most satisfied customers, was tourism" (p. 159). Bosworth examines primarily the origins, development and organisation of this industry and makes some occasional forays into its impact on the perception of Italy and Italian products abroad. In the past Bosworth has been occasionally criticized for what Christopher Seton-Watson has called the "excessively moralistic and condemnatory" tone of his writings on Italy (see his review of this same volume in Modern Italy, 1, 2, Autumn 1996: 110-112). I find Bosworth's tone to be occasionally sarcastic, but this appears to me as a strength rather than a weakness. It helps the reader keep things in perspective and makes the reading more interesting and often even enticing. The volume is to be particularly recommended to doctoral students grappling with the literature on Italian foreign relations and looking for a thesis topic. Almost every paragraph in this book, in fact, provides a point of departure for further research. The only major problem with this volume is its price: $ 90.95 Canadian seem excessive. Bosworth, however, can hardly be faulted for this.
