Great Historical Fiction with insights on why the Ukraine isn't Kansas

A polish take on chelminski's (spelling) Cossack rebellion against the Poles in the Ukraine. Lot's of sword play, a love story, evil witches and Pan Zagloba -- the Polish Falstaff. An incredibly good read for only 99 cents.

Read this and Taras Bulba by Gogol to get the other side.

First of a trilogy. The Deluge is next where you find a quite different take on the Swedes

Them Poles (and them Cossacks too) are tough dudes.

The book starts out slowly and the translation into English is a bit cumbersome but the narrative and action improve dramatically as the book goes on. I think of the book as Ukraine's "War and Peace" If you like historical novels and ones that are not linked to England, France, or Germany this is a wonderful read.

The Nigerian Civil War broke out in 1967 after the country's Eastern Region declared itself the independent state of Biafra. It lasted for nearly three years. Of the many conflicts and wars that have ravaged Africa this was one of the most hard-fought, and if ever an air war was fought in the shadows, then this was it. The Biafran Air Force was equipped with a motley mix of antiquated and modem aircraft, all obtained through dubious and clandestine channels. For much of the conflict it was overshadowed and outclassed by the Nigerian Air Force, equipped primarily with mercenary-crewed MiG 17s, Il 28s and L-29 Delfins. But Biafra held out, even though for most of the conflict it was landlocked, its only link to the outside world an air bridge to a converted bush airstrip deep in the Biafran heartland. It supported an amazing airlift of food and arms, second only to the Berlin Airlift of 1948. Fusing first hand accounts and much original documentation this is the story of a conflict which the world did not want to happen, but one which the illegal international arms trade wanted never to end. About the Author
Michael Draper was briefly involved in the airlift to Biafra during 1968 and was later involved with an attempt to ferry other aircraft there. The concept of Shadows emerged during conversations with pilots and other personnel engaged in organizing flights to and from Biafra. Draper has researched the subject for almost thirty years, often with assistance from various illegal gunrunners. He also gained access to many confidential files, as well as Church and International Red Cross records.

Air war in the nigerian civil war

This book is the best book about the Nigerian civil war written.
It is very detailed with a very complet information about the activities of the diferent aircraft in this war. It give information about the aerial operations of both parties but the book is focusing in the biafran side.
I recomend this book to all people interested in the african conflicts and especially in the air war.

The Secret of Annexe 3 features Dexter's (The Jewel That Was Ours, Audio Reviews, LJ 9/15/94) popular Inspector Morse investigating a murder that results from a husband's discovery of his wife's infidelity. The story begins somewhat slowly but eventually captures the listener's attention through Dexter's ability to draw his characters and scenes so well. The interrogations are especially well done. Morse is as brooding and moody as the Wagnerian operas he loves. Stage and screen actor Michael Pennington's reading is clear, and the tone of his voice highlights the minor key of this work and Morse's character. An enjoyable work for public libraries.

Colin Dexter again, provides us with another example of his mental dexterity in another sleuthing classic with the nicotine and Glenfiddich riddled Morse - the main man - Brilliant!

A nice, middling Morse

I came across this in a used book store and recognized it immediately for what it was: a Morse mystery that I had never read. As Inspector Morse stories go, this one is good but not exceptional. It is always good to be in the presence of the cranky Inspector, especially since he is so clearly personified by the late, great John Thaw, and this story has some very unique elements in the telling of a good story, but it relies a little too much on coincidence for its final resolution. It was a necessary device in this case, but if Morse hadn't been in that particular pub at that particular time... Oh, well. I think we read these as much for the enjoyment of Morse's cognitive processes and his relationship with Lewis, his long-suffering sergeant. And there are far worse ways to spend and evening! (I don't want this back.)

A Good Book

Inspector Morse is finally starting to grow more likable. He is not as bumbling as in his earlier books and not quite as lecherous. He does make a date with one of the witnesses and you would really hate him to go cold turkey. The murder takes place at a hotel's New Year Eve's Eve party. While the story is middling, Lewis and Morse's relationship makes the book enjoyable.
