There appear to be certain lofty members of our profession including (rather astoundingly) a few members of the judiciary who still think cyberspace is something of a space oddity. They should only read this book.

Aimed specifically at the criminal law fraternity, Ian Walden’s ‘Digital Crimes and Digital Investigations’ will nonetheless be of interest to all lawyers who inevitably will have to deal with ‘high tech’ crime issues. In providing an overview of this indubitably vexed subject, this book, now in a new second edition, makes an important contribution to the still relatively scarce body of literature concerning this specialised area of law.

The first edition was published – would you believe – nine years ago. And in case there are still a number of practitioners and judges out there who need reminding, the Internet was long past its infancy even then, having been in widespread use at the time for at least ten years. Recently published by the Oxford University Press, the book provides an important update which will certainly be welcomed by criminal practitioners.

As the title indicates, the focus is on computer crime, more commonly referred to as ‘cyber-crime’ – a phenomenon facilitated by the ever-developing technologies of computer connectivity – i.e. the Internet. Now ubiquitous and almost instantly available, the Internet in the author’s words, has become ‘a key resource of the global economy.’ Largely unregulated (except in totalitarian states) the Internet has also become a key resource for assorted criminals and terrorists.

Author Ian Walden, who hails from Baker McKenzie and teaches an LLM course entitled ‘International Cybercrimes and Investigations’, mentions that the clients with whom he has had dealings, have exposed him to issues and insights that are not normally available to academics. He has also been a board member of a number of institutions concerned with Internet scrutiny, particularly on Internet safety.

The book, he says, may be viewed simply as a criminal law text’ ‘operating as a filter through which we can examine the whys and wherefores of criminal law and policy.’ It can be regarded as a computer crime book, or ‘a book on crime with a cyberspace filter’ -- in short, a book which focuses specifically on crime, as opposed to other aspects of internet usage such as contracts, trademarks, domain names and the like, not to mention ordinary communications.

As the author also remarks, it is obvious that computers ‘may play a part in the commission of nearly every form of criminal activity, from fraud to murder.’ The subject area is so wide that large chunks of it go beyond the scope of this book. The author therefore turns our attention to problems where computers and networks are involved, ‘either,’ he says, because ‘the legislation was drafted in an era before such technology was envisaged, or because statutory drafting has failed to be robust enough to appropriately address the use of information computer technologies (ICT).’ And there, fellow lawyers, lies the crux of the problem.

This is indeed a massive subject and those who crave further information on it will find research references aplenty in this book, including tables of cases, legislation and international treaties and conventions. Also note the four appendices, extensive footnoting and the ten-page bibliography.

Based on recent developments in digital and the current pace of change, it is anticipated that further editions of this distinguished and accessible work of reference will appear in the future, ideally at more frequent intervals.

Superb anti-bullying guide

I highly recommend this book to parents, kids and teens as an optimal resource for helping bullied victims overcome their anguish and develop coping and leadership skills that they'll carry through life. Author Karl Romain wrote a concise book covering all aspects of bullying, including cyber bullying and the emotional havoc that bullied victims undergo. As a World Champion Kung Fu Master, Karl has trained individuals of all ages not only how to defend themselves, but also how to build confidence through mastering a discipline. It is a must read-I thoroughly enjoyed it as a health and wellness writer/expert.

Fail.

Some background: I'm a prof teaching AI, and I wanted something a little more approachable for undergrads than Russell & Norvig. I adopted Lucci & Kopec mostly due to its conversational writing style, that I felt would encourage students to read on their own, and to understand the material. I should have read more than the intro before making my decision--it was a lousy choice.

The examples are poorly concocted, and the figures are unclear. For example, they introduce Dijkstra's Algorithm, but call it by another name (the "greedy algorithm", ignoring that there's a whole *class* of algorithms considered greedy), and proceed to work through it without adequately explaining reasoning or motivation at each step. Tree figures demonstrating minimax are unholy messes that look like they were whipped out in PowerPoint, with extraneous junk and poor or no use of color/shading to clarify. Errors abound, and yet I can find no errata online. The minimax tree for randomized-nim is inconsistent, leading to an erroneous decision, which propagates all the way back to the text. Figures for chess problems (e.g. n-queens) use letters for pieces rather than the accepted, standard icons--making them quite difficult to read. They can't even be bothered to use the proper wedge symbols for logical "and" and "or", instead using combinations of slashes ("/\" and "\/"). Typesetting is a *must* in any professional book, and Lucci & Kopec lacks it. How can you be a CS prof without knowing LaTeX?! These examples go on and on.

I'm now looking forward to a semester fighting my textbook, rather than using it as a valuable tool. This is a pity...the *style* of the book is strong, and is good for students. But they didn't spend enough effort editing the *substance*, and that makes this book nearly worthless. It should have been better.

Best Since Norvig and Russell

The variety of areas covered in this AI textbook makes it one of the most comprehensive and best book on Artificial Intelligence since Norvig and Russell's modern Approach. I loved the coverage on Informed Searches and Logic. It is the new must have in AI textbooks. The examples are new, relevant and much easier to understand than previous texts. This is one of the few books that I kept from my studies.

A fantastic overview of the field

The book is a great overview of the science. It covers many topics, but goes into none of them in depth. I enjoy the frequent addition of side-bar biographies of key people. After reading this book, you should have a good understanding of the layout of the field of Artificial Intelligence as it stands today, and have an idea of where you would like to start searching next for deeper understanding. While the book does have you 'get your feet wet' with several questions and programming challenges at the end of each chapter, you should not expect to be an expert in any one of the fields of AI when you finish reading this overview.

Thorough survey of precision manufacturing

This book presents a very thorough survey of the field of precision manufacturing. Key concepts in precision machine design as well as precision manufacturing processes are discussed. Understanding the former is critical in fully understanding the latter, and this is one of the few books that talks about both aspects in considerable length. I really liked the way the book began with an overview of the historical development of manufacturing technology and their motivators. It helped in setting context for the discussions that followed, and demonstrated that while the basic drives of precision have remained the same, as better and better precision is needed in products and systems, the techniques of achieving them keep changing.

The authors spend a few chapters discussing the various sources of precision (and imprecision) in machine and systems, such as thermal errors, vibrational errors, and structural errors. There is an excellent discussion on error mapping, which talks about how to combine different sources of errors in determining the net error in a mechanical system. These chapters provide good background and context for the subsequent discussion on precision manufacturing processes. The book focusses on mechanical material removal processes, and talks about processes on the conventional scale as well as on the micro scale. There is a brief discussion on semiconductor and nano scale processes as well.

I felt that this book gives an excellent overview of precision manufacturing. The field is quite broad, and the authors do not try fully span it, but instead try to highlight its most important concepts. Copious references are provided, and material from diverse sources are pulled together. Some of the concepts discussed, like vibrations for example, are covered in much greater detail in other texts (which are acknowledged), but the point of this book is to show how these different concepts influence manufacturing processes and systems. I taught a graduate course based on the material in this book, and I felt that its scope was quite appropriate for the class. However, it has to be mentioned that it does not fit the profile of a traditional textbook, as it does not have many examples and no end-of-chapter exercises. But this is to be expected as the topic does not lend itself to simple problems (strictly speaking, most of the problems in the field are research problems and are discussed in academic journals, quite a few of which are cited in the text).

This book will serve well as a reader for a graduate course, and as a reference for design and manufacturing engineers.

Excelent coverage of wide array of topics. Very, very informative. It is written for grad level work so this is not for someone who does not already have a very good background in regular manufacturing processes.

The definitive text on radar

This book is admirably suited to either a one-semester or two-semester course in radar principles and design. More than that, it contains a good deal of information that's useful even to those of us who have designed and worked with radars for many years.
The common faults of written material on radar are either to focus too narrowly on one aspect of the topic, or to omit material on the assumption that it must be classified when in fact it is not. Edde's book avoids both pitfalls. He gives thorough, comprehensive information on all sorts of radars, past and present, designed for various uses, and leaves the conscientious reader prepared to think clearly about where to start when confronted with a request for something new and different.
Suppose you were asked to sketch out an initial design for a radar whose purpose is to track bird migration on the Atlantic flyway. Where would you start? What criteria would you strive to meet? To what extent could you hope to distinguish between types of migrating birds? What help might you hope to provide for keeping track of individual flocks during migration? What design techniques might be useful? How much of what kind of signal processing would you expect to need?
I don't know about you, but left to my own devices I could stumble around for quite a while contemplating such questions. To avoid wasting time this way, I would sit down and rapidly skim Edde's book again, cover to cover, taking notes on what might be useful ideas and starting points.
