About the Author

Charles Platt is a Contributing Editor and regular columnist for Make magazine, where he writes about electronics. He is the author of the highly successful introductory hands-on book, Make:Electronics, and is writing this sequel to that book in addition to volumes 2 and 3 of the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components.

Platt was a Senior Writer for Wired magazine, and has written various computer books. As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. He lives in a Northern Arizona wilderness area, where he has his own workshop for prototype fabrication and projects that he writes about for Make magazine.

2nd Make Electronics

Better than the first Make Electronics book. Better detail of parts in the index was a big help over the first book and the projects are very interesting and helpful if you are trying to learn electronics. I'm retired and this is something I have been wanting to do fro a long time and I'm really enjoying the book and the projects along with my Arduino programming that I am doing parallel with this book.

Excellent Addition to Original

This book is a great addition to the original Make Electronics book. The author made the format work well in the kindle format, which is great. The experiments start basic and quickly move on, so you should definitely read the first book if you are new to electronics. The only thing that is inconvenient is that the kit with all of the components for the experiments is not available yet, so you have to find the components yourself.

Shaking the dust off my Bachelor's Degree in Electronics for less than $40!

As I've mentioned in other reviews, I'm diving head-first into this Maker movement. I've purchased the Arduino microcontrollers, bought the shields, hooked up a Raspberry Pi and Beaglebone mini server, made some LEDs flash with complicated coding... and after the solder-smoke induced haze departs, I realize... "I've already got a degree in Electronics!" (earned decades ago, mind you.)

Mr. Platt's "Make: More Electronics" takes the basics learned in his previous book and expands upon them one thousand-fold. From complex logic games, to a 386-based amplifier, Platt takes you through theory and application behind these electronics, and walks you through the construction phase. While other books show simple schematics that translate into complicated projects, Platt outlines how the parts line up on the breadboard - easy, peasy.

It took me $20K to get a college education that I'm pretty sure this book would have given (covering the first three years, anyway...)

One word of advice: purchase the pre-collated kits with the materials. Platt mentions the places to purchase the items; but kits are available with all of the needed pieces. It will save you time, money and a significant headache (from all of the soldering, de-soldering and flux smoke from re-doing projects with the "right" parts).

It's not surprising that West, an Englishman and the veteran author of numerous books on history and travel, is an admirer of "the fertility of Defoe's brain as well as the physical strength of his writing hand." West's life of the prolific if unconventional journalist who invented so much of his nonfiction that he moved easily into the novel, begins rather stiffly but becomes livelier as Defoe (1660-1731) grows up, writes more and gets into more trouble. West concedes at the start that he has not written "a definitive, academic, or even scholarly analysis of Defoe's writing." Nor has he produced a biography, he confesses, to replace Paula Backschneider's far more substantial Daniel Defoe (1989). Rather, inspired by Defoe's semifictional three-volume A Tour of the Whole Island of Great Britain (to West the writer's masterpiece), he turns to Defoe's neglected, often imaginative travel books and the author's equally slighted run of lively and pioneering news-and-gossip papers of 1704-13. West's life, then, is for readers who want to know more about the compulsive writer, royal secret agent and bankrupt London merchant than the author of Robinson Crusoe, Moll Flanders and his pseudo-histories and pseudo-memoirs. Defoe's method, West contends, was "the exercise of imagination?quite a different thing from invention or lying." Much more than a political pamphleteer and political spy, or the tireless hack penning bogus autobiographies, Defoe emerges in West's colorful (if sourceless) biography as an adventurer whose authentic life might have made his best book. 16 pages of b&w illustrations.

Few biographical subjects have led more intriguing lives than Defoe (1660^-1731). He is most famous as the author of Robinson Crusoe, but that ur-novel was a product of the penultimate of several careers. Defoe had been a rebel soldier, a feckless entrepreneur, a fearless pamphleteer, a confidant to King William III, a Tory government spy, and a pioneering political journalist before becoming a book writer who mixed fiction and fact so smoothly that literary detectives are still sifting the realities out of his so-called novels and the fancies out of his classic Tour of the Whole Island of Great Britain. Bankrupted young, he later sat in the pillory for the sake of a free press and proved so politically independent that he was finally attacked by Tories and Whigs alike. Meanwhile, he sired seven children in his marriage to the long-suffering Mary Tuffley. During his last years, though a semi-invalid after a horrible operation for bladder stones, he ventured into business again, with similar sad results. He died fleeing his creditors and, as always, writing and publishing. Although West devotes most of this big book's latter half to synopses--with more extrapolation than exegesis in them--of the novels and the Tour and seems not to have done any original research, he writes splendidly, reanimating Defoe and his genuinely turbulent era (seventeenth-century England, in particular, was as brutal and dangerous as contemporary Bosnia) in a smart and engrossing popular biography. In Daniel Defoe: The Life And Strange, Surprising Adventures, biographer Richard West tells the story of Daniel Defoe, a maverick, a Puritan, and a dissenter without a constituency. Defoe was also a bankrupt who rubbed elbows with a king, a hack who never failed to pursue the truth. And the writer who produced such literary classics as Moll Flanders, Roxana, A Journal of the Plague Year, and Robinson Crusoe. Defoe's life was every bit as dramatic and unexpected as the protagonists of his famous novels. West has wonderfully and scrupulously recreated the remarkable personality and the colorful times that shaped and were shaped by this noted, fascinating, unique and historic literary figure.

To any reader,even to one who has a limited understanding of British history, West paves a path among the intrigue of the Whigs and Tories, and has his reader follow the footsteps of Defoe into the Tower of London, the roads of Great Britain, and the gardens of rulers. With the ability to explain Defoe's mysterious background, West guides the reader toward an understanding of a man who has remained elusive for centuries. West offers the reader an explanation for the many masks that Defoe wore as writer, invester, spy and traveler. With the skill of a story-teller, West opens a world of historic fact even to the most reluctant non-fiction reader.

West provides a very readable, unfussy biography, presenting a vivid and detailed portrait of Defoe's life and times. He falls short with his "analysis" of the novels, which amounts to little more than plot summary, but his insight into Defoe's character--as a man of high moral principle who occasionally succumbed to expediency--is priceless.

Great book, easy to read!

The book covers all parts of a web application like data managing, caching, session, interfaces and the frontend. The author describes all the layers by explaining them with a lot of real world samples. The main focus is really on scalability aspects, which are covered in all chapters. The book also contains good design guides for writting high quality software.

I've worked for two startups and I think that if the founding engineers had read this book before starting their endeavors neither company would have been in the technological mess that they are in and are seemingly unable to overcome. Great read. Highly recommend.

Best high-level coverage of web application scalability

Let me start by setting the context. In the summary section of the final chapter here is a quote from the author.
"I have covered a lot of different topics in this book and although I have just scratched the surface of many of these subjects, I believe that it will help you build a holistic picture of scalability and inspire you to learn more about it."
The above summarizes the book completely. If you want to get a high-level picture of what web application scalability entails, this is the book to read. It breaks down the problem into its constituent parts, and then provides the necessary high-level detail of each component. Even though the title suggests that this book is only for startup engineers, I think this book has value to any software professional looking to start the journey on grasping the subject. I have extensively tried searching for this material, and have not been successful in finding an alternative. The list of references provided is perfect for getting into the details of any area(s) that you may choose it, as a follow up after this book.

It is my first time to encounter the concept of financial technology and I must say that this book helped a lot in giving me the proper introduction to this technological system. Although at the moment it is far from perfect, there is a big potential for this system. As we begin to become aware of the bitcoin processes, learning about the financial technology becomes more important than ever before. I appreciate the simple analogies used by the author to fully explain the concept to even the most novice of readers.

Success in the Midst of Failure

I was given a copy of this book, and I started reading it immediately. Then canvassing happened, and I had to come back to it months later. Overall I found the book encouraging. It talks about finding success in the midst of failure, which we all need, because we all fail at times. Failure is very discouraging, and sometimes we may feel like not getting back up when we fall. However, Dr. Pipim points to the verse that says, "a righteous man may fall 7 times, yet he gets back up." Above all, Dr. Pipim points to the bible for encouragement, citing examples of biblical heroes that fell, yet still got back up and kept trying.

Dr. Pipim does talk about his personal failure, but not so much that it takes away from the main focus of the book. The book is ultimately not about the author's failure, but how one can move on from failure towards success. The author wrote this book to share his insights about going to God when we fall, because ultimately, He's the only one who can pick us up.

I think the only major problem with the book was all the Ellen White quotes. Not because I dislike Ellen White, but I feel like if I want to find quotes from her, I can go read one of her books. At times I could not tell when the quotes ended and where Dr. Pipim's thoughts began. I have not read any of his other books, so I do not know if this is his usual way of writing.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of purchasing it.

Must Read book if you want to succeed.

This is such a timely book from Dr. Pipim. I'm currently reading it and can hardly put it down! Just when I thought I had success all figured out, Dr. Pipim throws a curve ball--- adjusting the lenses through which I define success. He has the audacity to even paint a picture of success--- in the midst of failure! Yes in deed. Thank you for this wonderful work. I'm hoping many of my colleagues will read it too and find inspiration like I'm finding. Thank you sir.

so do not recommend buying this book

Dr. Pipi wrote this book as part of his justification for what he termed a "moral fall" While he publicly admitted to adultery after the victim in Botswana came forward, in fact the wounded party was a 20 year old girl who came to him for counselling. As a 50+year old preacher, Dr. Pipim lured her into his hotel room and, according to the victim, raped her twice.

I cannot give the audio book five stars because I haven't fully listened to it.

However, so far, after one of three discs this appears to be another big corporation culture change dream. Make the change yourself to do the best you can and be cooperative. A little personal integrity will go a long ways to make this country better.

Reasonably good

I got this book partially because I prefer more of a textbook format than the Head First books. This book's format was more straightforward, so I got it along with the Head First Servlets and JSP. However, I have found a lot of errors, inconsistencies and confusing explanations in this book. Some of the errors are minor, but others really cause fundamental confusion. I'm searching for an errata for the book now. (There may not be one -- I'm not finding it yet.)

Although the Head First books have a comic, cartoonish quality that I don't generally care for, I must say that their editing is better, their explanations are always understandable, and I find myself going to that book to clear up my confusion with this one.

That being said, there is a lot of very good information in this book and some of the explanations and examples are pretty good. You might consider getting both books because they both cover the material in different ways.

I was tempted to give the book four stars, but I've just hit another few errors that are really irritating. (The author is trying to explain the difference between the forward() and include() functions for handling servlet requests. But his code examples mistakenly are showing forward() where apparently he meant to type include(). These examples do not match the explanation at all. See pages 183 and 184.)

Another egregious error: In the Head First Servlets & JSP book, they make a point of saying "You need to recognize WRONG method names like: getPrintWriter(), getResponseStream(), [...]" etc. And there's a big X in a circle on top of these names. Look at the SCWCD book by D. Bridgewater on page 179. Guess what method he uses inside the code example -- getPrintWriter() !!! (Gee, and I was wondering why my code would not compile.) In that SAME code sample, you can see him getting a PrintWriter object and calling the "write" method on it. I was perplexed by this because I saw them using the "println" method in the same situation in the Head First book. Well, apparently there is a difference, even though the code does work. Sierra and Bates in Head First make a point of saying you should use "println" with a PrintWriter and a "write" with a ServletOutputStream. They explain why, of course. I don't know about you, but these sorts of errors are confusing. I'm not even mentioning the multitudes of small typos throughout the book, like: java.servlet.forward.path_info. (servlet is in the javax package, not java.)

In any case, the book might be worth getting, and if you are able to find an errata it would make the book much more usable. If you do not find an errata that covers all of these errors (I've only mentioned a few), then be sure to get some other resource to check this one against so you can understand parts that are erroneous or confusing.

Messy , but practical

This book material is actually decent, accurate and complete, but exposed in a very disorganized and confusing way, with a writing style that will put you to sleep in seconds. It also contains some typos, a defect particularly unforgivable in a certification book. For style , organization and overall coolness 'Head First SCWCD' is way ahead of this book, but it does have a drawback: no code examples. Certification book or not, lack of code examples is a mortal sin (of laziness) by the authors. This book does have a few code example (structured as exercises) for the most important sections in each chapter, and a final 'lab' (simple exercise) at the end of each chapter. I like that, but I also have to say that the code examples are sometimes unnecessarily convoluted, and badly structured. Each small example is a single web application. Trust me, you will soon get tired of having to decompress and mess with every single damn war of these examples. How about a single web application organized as an Eclipse project with a ant build file to build it and deploy it instead? So, if you already have enough practice in coding java webapps, and just want to brush up the dusty corners and get used to the nasty, useless, tricky questions that plague certification exams, 'Head First SCWCD' should be your favorite choice.
But if you like to do a little practice and see the concept you're studying in action, this book would be more appropriate. This book can also be used to actually learn Servlet & JSP, not just to pass the exam.
Finally, a big plus is having the entire pdf version of the book on the accompanying CD, which also contains a free exam simulator. (All things you don't get with the O'Reilly book).

A lot of errors

I would not recommend this book even though it covers all of exam objectives and has a lot of examples and exercises. The reason is that there are a lot of errors that make this book hard to read. It is very irritating, annoying and time consuming.
Here are just some of errors I found in the book.
1. Answer to question 13 on page 88: "...HttpServletRequest.getHeaders() returns all request header names..." It is not correct because the method that returns all request header names is getHeaderNames(). There is no getHeaders() method (with no arguments) in HttpServletRequest class.
2. Page 82 question 19. Author mistakenly took the code from question 8 so the question 19 and answer to it on page 90 are completely irrelevant.
3. On page 559 author says that the type for 'items' attribute is java.lang.Array. There is no such class in Java!
4. Page 637 answer to question 8: "...J to 14 (c:forEach, again)". If you look at question's code on page 625 you can see that correct answer should be: J maps to 'body'.

Number of errors, big and small, is very high in this book. This is the case of unprofessional work both on the part of author & editor.

I loved this book. It was very informative and after employing the techniques discussed within this excellent piece of information, I can already start to see a difference in myself.

Without giving away to many details about the book I'll say this: This will certainly help you achieve whatever your goals in life may be. For me it was asking for help to get motivated with some personal issues I was facing. By employing the techniques described within I was able to seem to become more motivated in my day to day living. I think it's because I was able to channel some of the energy described within these pages.
