Recommended for those interested the personalities of history.

Not an easy read, but full of facts and interesting timelines describing an amazing time in world history.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has tried to follow the many early events and personalities leading up to the amazing departure by Guy Burgess from the West.

What revolution?

There existed terrible poverty, starvation, and suffering in many parts of the world before the British Empire and capitalism reached them. There continues to be terrible such suffering after the British Empire and, in some sad cases, capitalism, have left, although less so in some areas. This is the biography of a man of little interest except for his treason. It is animated by passionate hatred of the British Empire and capitalism. Although this makes for extravagant attention to detail, it requires very narrow attention to a very limited historical time and array of characters and events.
There are some interesting items: the interview with Churchill; London clubs and nightlife; life in Moscow. Whether they are worth the voluminous and poorly organized material about the hero is debatable. Even if you hate the British Empire and capitalism you might want to do some skimming.

A page-turner with an original point of view

A clear-eyed, counter-conventional view of Burgess, avoiding the "traitor" paradigm and considering him as a highly intelligent man making rational choices in the fraught circumstances of his place and time. Superbly researched and written. Recommended.
